Dancing away to glory to burn extra calories

Saroj Wadhwa, 38, a Kandivli resident, arrived at the Moksh wellness centre at Breach Candy before 8am, determined to attend as many sessions as possible on the last day of the Hindustan Times-Moksh Wellness Festival. “Through the week I had to go to work, so I couldn't be here as much as
I wanted,” she says. “I decided to make up for it today.”

Wadhwa started with the 8am yoga workshop and went on to participate in the next two sessions, on belly dancing and stress management. At noon, she took a break and returned for the zumba, cross fit and tango sessions, the last conducted by Sandip Soparrkar.

“I’ve had a great day,” she said, grinning.

A total of more than 1,500 fitness enthusiasts attended the weeklong wellness festival, organised by Hindustan Times and Moksh — The Wellness Centre as part of Hindustan Times’ Fitter Mumbai campaign.

The festival offered a total of 85 free walk-in workshops, offering participants a chance to try out a wide range of fitness techniques, including various types of yoga, different dance forms such as salsa, ballroom, belly dancing and Bollywood dance, martial arts techniques such as capoeira and kickboxing, and pilates, rebounding, etc.

The workshops also offered participants counselling on nutrition and healthy lifestyle, the art of ageing and stress management.

“We had a huge turnout for the salsa and ballroom dance workshops, with people coming all the way from as far as Bhayander and Vasai,” said celebrity dance instructor Sandip Soparrkar.

“We had to divide them into groups and stretch our scheduled time by half an hour to accommodate them all,” Soparrkar added.

“Zumba saw over 40 participants per class, followed by pilates that had and 30 people per workshop. Bollywood aerobics, and yoga for couples, too had excellent participation,” said Moksh director Rina Nandy.

“I’m impressed with all the workshops I have attended so far. I especially enjoyed the pole dancing class,” said Leena Mukhi, 41, fashion designer from Nepean Sea Road.

Sheetal Mishra, 26, did not miss a single day of the festival and will look forward to more such sessions, she says.

“It was a fantastic week. I’ve never got the opportunity to experience so many forms of activities in such a short span and that too for free. Now I know exactly which fitness regime I should take up and what makes me happy,” said the homemaker.  HT Correspondent
