Fernando Garibay is the musical director for Lady Gaga's "Born this way" album, a production that in less than a month has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide.
However, the huge hit is not changing Garibay, whose musical genius has also contributed to the success of Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin, Britney Spears, U2 and many others.
Fernando was born in East Los Angeles where he grew up listening to mariachi music and the singing group ABBA, the music listened to by his parents, Mexican immigrants Javier and Cristina Garibay.
"In fact, they named me after the song 'Fernando' by ABBA and I think that that set my life (on its course)," said the musician, producer and composer in a interview with Efe at his Hollywood studio.
The young Fernando learned to play the drums, the piano and guitar, among other instruments and at age 13 attended the USC music school, where during his studies he made his first recordings of techno music which quickly made him one of the most sought-after DJ's in Los Angeles.
By age 18, he already had signed a contract with Interscope Records, the label for which he began creating remixes for artists like Marc Anthony, Will Smith and Sting, among others, and he is now an executive with the label.
"I met Lady Gaga at Interscope 4 years ago. She and I had a very strong connection right from the start.
When we started talking, we discovered that we had many things in common, we both put up with teasing and misunderstandings in our childhood, we both see music as the ideal medium in which to express ourselves and we believe in freedom as a fundamental principle," he explained.
