Year In Review 2011: Best Dressed Latino Celebrities

2011 might not have been the best year for Latinos with regards to politics, education or immigration reform, but when it came to fashion, Latinos most certainly hit all the right notes.

We saw Latino celebrities readily making it to "Best Dressed" lists. TV star and activist Eva Longoria was praised by fashion commentators for her black Zac Posen gown at the 2011 Golden Globes awards. Similarly, film, TV and music star Selena Gomez was complimented for the golden body-fitted J Mendel dress she wore to this year's Grammy Awards.

The wave of recognition continued as legendary Peruvian fashion photographer, Mario Testino, was honored at El Museo del Barrio's Annual Gala in May. His work has been featured in magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair and he has contributed to the imagery of leading fashion houses such as Burberry, Gucci, Versace, Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana and Hugo Boss, making him one the world's most renowned contemporary fashion photographers.

In 2011 we saw Latinos and Latinas experimenting and taking new risks with their fashion styles, at the forefront of new trends. They were often visibly influenced by their Latino roots and culture, seen in their choice of wearing up-and-coming designers, bold colors, organic textiles and prints, reinforcing the stereotypical sensuality or 'hotness' associated with Latinos.

The slideshow below reflects our opinion as to some of the best dressed Latinos of 2011. It includes men and women, musicians and films stars, models and fashion designers.

Do you agree with this list? Who do you think is THE best dressed Latino celebrity this year? Please share your thoughts in the comments below. And for more on the best of 2011, visit bestof2011.aol.com.

Camilla Belle, the L.A. native of Brazilian descent, is our choice as the most fashionable Latina of 2011. Her impeccable taste and eye for elegance makes her one of Hollywood's most fashionable stars.

Belle has been working in Hollywood since she 7 years old and landed a role in the made-for-TV "Empty Cradle".

In 2011, she dazzled in a pink corset dress at the Chopard reopening celebration of their South Coast Plaza boutique in Orange County. She proved that one can be classic and still have fun with fashion at The Young Hollywood Awards, where she wore a white Tom Ford suit.

Her eye for fashion took her to the runway this year. Alberta Ferretti picked "real people" to walk the runway at her 2011 Pitti Immagine Uomo 79 fashion show in Florence and Belle was one of her chosen models. She donned a beautiful low-cut silver dress. She won over the crowd.

Selena Gomez Hosts MTV EMAs; Bieber Wins & Talks Paternity Rumors

As Selena Gomez hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards, she also stood by her man, Justin Bieber, despite the swirling paternity rumors, as he and Lady Gaga won top prizes, including “Best Male” and “Best Female Act.”

Bieber also took home the award for “Best Pop Act” and had the crowd at his finger tips with his new single “Mistletoe” from the latest album “Under the Mistletoe.” He also treated his Bieliebers to one of his most popular jams, “Never Say Never.”

A casually dressed Bieber said modestly that he had voted for competitor Kanye West and thanked his fans and family for his first award.

"Never say never, right?" Bieber said, waving his trophy in the air.

After winning his second award, for “Best Pop Act,” he praised his fans for staying with him despite "a lot of crap on the Internet," an apparent reference to unsupported allegations that he had fathered a child after a brief liaison.

Bieber, and his relationship with superstar girlfriend Selena Gomez, have been under a microscope after California native Mariah Yeater filed a paternity lawsuit against Bieber, claiming he is the father of her her three-month-old son.

The news, first reported by Star Magazine, came just as Gomez was offered a new role, “Spring Breakers” starring actors James Franco, Emma Roberts and Vanessa Hudgens.

Nevertheless, Gomez is standing with Bieber. She and Bieber were seen hand-in-hand as they arrived in Belfast, Ireland Saturday evening.

Gomez not only hosted but also performed Sunday night. She looked looked stunning in a bedazzling purple jump-suit which showed off her legs as she performed “Hit The Lights.”

Following the lead of last year’s EMA host, Eva Longoria, Gomez changed her outfit a whopping nine times throughout the ceremony.

Besides SelGo and Bieber, Gaga also made head turns with her striking outfits at the evening.

The superstar also won awards for “Best Song” and “Best Video” for her "Born This Way."

"Thank you so much, I love you so much. I'm so grateful. I'm really smiling right now, but I know you can't tell," said Gaga, wearing a bizarre silver dress with an oversize tilted hat that completely covered her face except for tiny holes that allowed her to see. She joked that she had had a lot of Botox treatment.

She thanked her "little monsters" for their support and said she regarded "Born This Way" as her most important work to date. She also won an award for having the best fan base.

Gaga, who has enjoyed a year of spectacular commercial success, beat out a strong field that included a resurgent Jennifer Lopez, Adele, Katy Perry and Beyonce.

Other awards went to Puerto Rican heartthrob Bruno Mars, in the “Best Push” and “Best New Artist” categories.

Bruno, 26, also rocked the crowd by performing “Mary You.”

The band Queen received the "Global Icon" award, in effect a lifetime achievement award to the now-graying rockers, who closed the show with a spirited set of their classics, including "WeWill Rock You" and "We Are the Champions."

The show also included a video tribute to the late Amy Winehouse, who died earlier this year in London.

Pop star Katy Perry — dressed in a mostly pink jacket and miniskirt — won the “Best Live Act” award, and the American Band Thirty Seconds to Mars won “Best Alternative Act and “Best World Stage.”

Eminem was named “Best Hip Hop” act and Linkin Park took the prize for “Best Rock Band.”

Desperate Children Are Eva Longoria's New Passion in 'The Harvest'

Twenty-five percent of the food we eat in the United States is harvested by children, Eva Longoria said in a phone interview from the set of "Desperate Housewives," now shooting its final season.

Every year, more than 400,000 children work in U.S. fields, according to a new documentary she lent her support to called "The Harvest."

Longoria is supporting the documentary about child migrant laborers not just because of her Latin American roots but also because she wants to know where her food comes from and take responsibility for it.

In the United States, harvesting work tends to be done by migrants of Latin American origin, but Longoria's interest in the subject didn't spring from that, but from the children who are growing up in the fields, the "Desperate Housewives" star says.

"I'm ninth-generation Mexican-American. We have ranches in Texas but you don't have to have that to have compassion," Longoria said. "I eat food and I'm a responsible human being and if you are responsible, you have to know where your food comes from."

"You have to be aware of the practices that are used to get the food we are eating," said the actress, who as executive producer of "The Harvest," raised nearly $1 million for the film, which will be released on DVD Tuesday.

"I've been involved with farm workers advocacy for a long time," she said, "but I recently found out, I didn't know there were so many children working legally in the fields."

"The Harvest" tells the story of three children who work as field laborers in Florida, Michigan and Texas to help their parents.

In the film, one of them, 12-year-old Zulema López, notes that she started working at such a young age, she doesn't even remember her first day. She adds that picking onions in Texas from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., she made $64 a week.

The child field workers work under an unforgiving sun and in paralyzing cold and run the same risks and suffer the same deprivations as adult laborers, the film shows. López, for example, recounts how she had to throw dirt on a wound to stop it from bleeding. The film also explains how migratory work makes it difficult for children to receive a proper education.

The film has been shown to members of Congress to put a face on a bill sponsored by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-Calif., that would raise the minimum age for field work in the U.S. from 12 to 14 years. It also seeks to create penalties for labor infractions against young field workers and reduce their exposure to pesticides.

"We want to use the film to change policy," Longoria said. "Children shouldn't have to choose between school and work."

Longoria says the most touching scene of the film for her is one in which López fears she'll have to work in the fields her entire life, remarking, "I don't even think about having dreams."

"That was heartbreaking," Longoria said. "Her grandmother works in the fields, her mother works in the fields, and she feels stuck and does not see herself leaving the fields."

Eva Longoria, Tina Fey are Best-Paid TV Actresses, Forbes Says

Tina Fey and Eva Longoria are the best-paid U.S. television actresses, according to a list published by Forbes magazine, which places both women in a tie for first place with annual earnings of $13 million each.

The stars of "30 Rock" and "Desperate Housewives," respectively, made these earnings between May 2010 and May of this year, the publication said.

Fey is also the main scriptwriter and executive producer of the NBC comedy, and her book "Bossypants" sold 150,000 copies in the first month after it was published in April.

Meanwhile, Longoria is the best-paid actress on "Desperate Housewives" thanks to her endorsement deals with brands such as L'Oreal and LG.

Her castmates on the ABC production are also on the list of best-paid actresses.

Marcia Cross is in third place, with earnings of $10 million, while Felicity Huffman and Teri Hatcher are tied for fifth place, with $9 million each.

Two other actresses also occupy the third-place slot: Mariska Hargitay ("Law & Order: SVU") and Marg Helgenberger ("CSI").

Rounding out the list are Courteney Cox and Ellen Pompeo, both with $7 million in income, and Julianna Margulies, with $6 million.

The figures on the Forbes list were calculated using data provided by attorneys, producers and agents to estimate the gross incomes of each of the actresses.

Latino Pride Shines at ALMA Awards

In a lively display of achievement and support, Latinos from all walks of the entertainment industry dazzled on the red carpet at last night's ALMA Awards at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles.

As expected, co-host Eva Longoria outshone George López in a beautiful mermaid strapless dress with an exaggerated tail.  Starlets like Jessica Alba, Marcia Cross, Eva La Rue, Naya Rivera and Demi Lovato added to the night's glamour in floor length gowns.

Power couples Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith, Mario López and Courtney Laine Mazza and Maria Canals-Barrera and David Barrera flirted across the carpet alongside Benjamin Bratt, Sophia Milos, David Zayas and Tristan Wilds.

Despite the festive mood, the event, held on the eve of September 11th, spurred stars to recognize the bravery of first responders.  Actor/director Edward James Olmos, commented  "We must try to help all the people who are sick because they went first to try to help when the buildings collapsed. That is my big understanding of what ten years of remembering is all about."

While the night catered to the glitz and glam of entertainment, red carpet chatter turned political as producer, director and screenplay writer Gregory Nava, who received the evening's Outstanding Career Achievement Award for directing, commented on domestic immigration policy.  "The immigration situation has gotten much worse since 9-11. The attack against the undocumented is now an attack against all Latinos," said Nava, "This is an attack on all our culture. We have to know that this is what is happening and we have to fight against this because it is an injustice."

Nava, known for "El Norte" and "Selena," revealed that he finished the script to "Garden of Eden" which will examine our current immigration issues.

Danny Trejo, whose suit jacket was lined with embroidered daggers, rejoiced about what the evening meant to him. "I love being Latino in Los Angeles," said Trejo, "Right now is the time for Latinos. We have moved quite forward in the entertainment industry with people like Robert Rodríguez, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodríguez that have really pushed us in the main stream. We are movie stars, for lack of a better word, but we are out there with all of them and I thank God for that."

The ALMA Awards, which featured performances from Pitbull and Gloria Estefan, will air on Friday, September 16 from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. EDT on NBC. The Alma Awards are given to Latino entertainers by the NCLR or National Council of La Raza who "promote positive portrayals of Latinos" in the entertainment industry.

Eva Longoria's Pole Dancing Workout

When Hollywood's A-list needs to learn to pole dance, they almost exclusively head to S Factor. The reason is simple: Founder and actress Sheila Kelley spawned the "sexy fitness" trend after playing a stripper in "Dancing at the Blue Iguana."

Since then, Kelley's company -- which also offers group classes -- has choreographed
striptease sequences for the likes of Marisa Tomei in "The Wrestler," Debra Messing (underwater!) in "Lucky You," Lisa Edelstein in "House" and Teri Hatcher in "Desperate Housewives." Now, the expert is helping Hatcher's co-star Eva Longoria with an upcoming striptease for their show, as well.

Of course, when Kelley, who will play one of Gossip Girl's newest characters this fall, started her pole dancing journey, there was no such thing as a striptease or burlesque class. "I learned by watching at strip clubs, imitating and exploring," she reveals. "I fell and got bruises, but ultimately I unlocked a more overt sexuality. And when sexuality becomes everyday, your life changes in positive, unexpected ways."

That experience did change the former dancer's life, unleashing an inner "erotic creature", working untapped muscles in her body and securing her appearances on Oprah and the like. "My body got longer, leaner and more feminine than it ever did when I was a ballerina," Kelley says.

Eva's Kitchen: A Pretty Tasty Place

Perhaps the same will be the case for Longoria, who showed up "full of energy" for a session last week at S Factor. This experience is quite different than your average fitness class: The lights are low in themed rooms like the bright orange Moroccan or velvet-appointed Bordeaux and red bulb-filled table lamps sit in each corner. In group sessions, a spotlight is on the teacher, so that students -- who are encouraged to wear hair down and free -- don't feel inhibited from moving provocatively. Emotionally fraught playlists include everything from Eminem to Damien Rice.

"It was so fun when Eva came in!" shares Kelley. "I turned the lights way low, which she commented on. Getting her into her own body was extraordinary because she's so beautiful. All this scintillating sexuality came out of her -- her body was smiling!"

Pole dancing is actually only one of six elements to S Factor's training, which also includes Wall Dancing, Lap Dance (with many variations and levels), S Movement itself, and The Strips & Teases and Routines that put it all together. So, some moves -- like the following exercise that Sheila Kelley worked on with the "Desperate Housewives" star -- can be done at home. Check it out and try it for yourself!

S Factor Spine Circle

1. Sit in a cross-legged position. First, get in touch with your breath because that's what truly moves your body.

2. Once you've become comfortable with that, exaggerate your inhale, pushing your chest all the way out at far as it possibly can go and letting your face and head reach up. You should feel and look like the mermaid prow of an ancient ship among singing sirens.

3. Then, grabbing a hold of your knees, begin to swirl your chest and ribcage in a circle, off to the right and then all the way to the wall behind you, scooping your belly.

4. Next, rotate all the way to your left, keeping your right hip nailed down. Then, move towards the front and make a beautiful arch forward. Rock off your sits bones, reaching your spine all the way back again.

**Use a full 10 to 15 seconds per circular movement/rotation to truly extend the muscles and engage them. Do five rotations on one side and then reverse directions. If the sensuality doesn't appeal, the fitness very well might. Kelley says that striptease classes target muscles that you rarely use: "You'll feel like 'I am the hottest person on the planet' and also my muscles are burning -- the body comes alive."

As for why hard-bodied celebrities like Longoria, who frequent S Factor's eight studios across the country, choose pole dancing: "They come here because it's high-end and because they feel safe," says Kelley. But it's also to awaken the "sexual giant" within. "Actors, movie stars and celebrities come to S Factor to discover their inner erotic creature, to be empowered by that and to integrate it back into their lives."

Eva Longoria on the End of 'Desperate Housewives': "Television is All About the Next, New, Best Thing"

It looks like the ladies of Wisteria Lane may have reached the end of their road. We're sad to say that it looks as though ABC will announce this weekend at the Television Critics Association's press tour that the 8th season (currently in production) will be the last for long-running Desperate Housewives. Castmembers are being told about the end of the series, and Deadline.com is reporting that Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, and Eva Longoria are surprised and saddened to hear the news. It's only natural for the cast to be shocked, especially since series creator Marc Cherry expected the show to run through nine seasons, it was the most-watched comedy series internationally in 2010, and ABC's third-highest revenue earning show.

We caught up with our favorite wife, Eva Longoria (aka Gabrielle Solis), at the recent National Council of La Raza conference and chatted to her about the show, Latinos on TV and the consistent Emmy snubs of Latina actresses.

Despite an acclaimed season, you were once again snubbed for an Emmy nod and there are just two Latino nominated—Sofia Vergara and Edgar Ramirez. What’s it going to take for Latinos to get more Emmy love?

I don’t know how else to say it, but they’re about ratings. So if a Latino or Latina lead is not on a hit show that is critically acclaimed, there are many obstacles for an actor of whatever color to be nominated. I think the biggest lesson for viewers and Latina’s readers is that if you’re not watching the shows, then you cannot complain that we’re not getting nominated. There was a reason that The George Lopez Show got cancelled: It didn’t have ratings and now it’s doing so well in syndication. And yet we have over 50 million Latinos in the United States that should have been watching The George Lopez Show. It’s the same with Latino films like Home For the Holidays, with John Leguizamo. It did not do well in theaters because Latinos did not go out and support it. Yet 30 percent of the audience of Pirates of the Caribbean was Latino. So if people want to see more diversity reflected in television and film, you have to support it.

Your breakthrough in Desperate Housewives was a big moment for Latinos on television. How would you characterize the state of diversity on television since then?

It has gotten better, but we take one step forward, two steps back. We have a character like mine and Lauren Velez’s [police Lt. Laguerta on Dexter]—these bright, smart women. Gabrielle was the richest person on the block. She doesn’t speak with an accent. Lauren Velez is a police chief who is doing amazing work. And then you have Sofia Vergara, who is the stereotypical Latina [Gloria on Modern Family] and she does it beautifully. It’s important that there those roles, because they all exist in our community. It’s a balance. So I think we’re slowly inching toward progress.

There has been talk that the upcoming season of Desperate Housewives may be its last. True?

Well, we’ve just started filming our new season; it’s exciting to be back. But beyond that, we don’t know because it’s all about ratings. Television is all about the next new best thing. But I’m going to be with this job as long as it will go.

Longoria Fights for Kids Who Work in Farm Fields

Washington –  Mexican-American actress Eva Longoria expressed her support Sunday for the end of child labor and denounced the fact that in the United States, one of the world's richest countries, child laborers sometimes go to bed without having eaten.

"It's not China, it's not Mexico, it's the United States," the actress said.

Longoria presented the trailer of the documentary "The Harvest" about child workers in the United States during the annual meeting of the National Council of La Raza, or NCLR, the largest Hispanic organization in the country.

The actress, who is the documentary's executive producer, said she was committed to these children, who work harvesting vegetables and other crops 14 hours a day, seven days a week, some of them as young as 10.

In the United States, there are some 500,000 children who work in agriculture who are "badly paid" and are shunted into the vicious circle of exclusion, without education and without the basic services that all children should have a right to receive, Longoria said.

"Every time a Latino is recognized for their talent, the image of Latinos changes for the better," the actress, best known for her role as Gabrielle Solis in the television series "Desperate Housewives," said.

Longoria also directed the documentary "Latinos Living the American Dream."

Eva's lesbian kiss with Kate del Castillo is a hit with film fest fans

"What can I tell you? It's like any other scene, except where there was a man, now there's a woman. What do you do, really?" del Castillo said, during an interview with Televisa Espectáculos. This isn't the first time del Castillo plays a lesbian role, as fans of hers remember her character Teresa Mendoza in the hugely popular Spanish soap 'La Reina del Sur.'

Longoria found the experience of playing a role alongside del Castillo incredible, she said. Longoria plays a woman who is left in charge of a small town in Latin America after all the men in the town are drafted into a guerrilla group.

"In the film Kate's and my character fall in love. These were very special scenes for me because I got the chance to work with such an incredible actress, whom I'd wanted to work with," Longoria said.
Del Castillo also fielded questions about her marriage to actor Aaron Diaz, which is rumored to be in the rocks. Del Castillo denied emphatically that she is separated from her husband.

"No, no it's not true. When we have something to say about it, we will. ..."
Longoria also dodged questions about her involvement with Penelope Cruz's little brother, Eduardo, saying, "Life is better right now without men. Right now I don't need a man in my life."

Still in character?

Eva Longoria, Eduardo Cruz tour his Madrid stomping ground

Actress Eva Longoria took a break from shooting 'The Boytown Disco' to meet up with her boyfriend Eduardo Cruz in Madrid. And Cruz quite literally took her by the hand for a guided tour of Spain's majestic capitol city.

Penelope Cruz's little brother made sure his actress girlfriend got to see his hometown as likely the best tour guide a girl could have. And like the best tour guides, Cruz too her to some of Madrid's most iconic places, such as el Palacio Real, la Plaza de Cibeles, la Puerta de Alcalá, the popular Parque del Retiro, la Plaza de Oriente and others.

The couple appear to be getting tighter and tigher, sailing strong on each others' arm. On this trip, the Mexican actress took exception to spend time with Cruz's family, according to Hola.com.

Although many bet on the relationship running amok, particularly because of the 10-year age difference between them, Eva is said to now be part of the family. According to media outlets in Spain, Eva is not only close to Eduardo's oldest sister and fellow actress Penelope, but also Eduardo's other sister Monica, who is also an actress. Eva and Monica have been seen dining out in Los Angeles on more than one occasion. Monica was also one of the first in the Cruz family to welcome Eva into the fold.

Another memorable moment of the visit was dinner out on Tuesday with Eduardo's sister Penelope and Oscar-winning husband Javier Bardem. The four dined at the exclusive 'El Caceron de Aracely' up in the mountains of Madrid. The restaurant is a hot spot for celebrities and politicians alike.

The four were seen chatting at ease in the mountain getaway, which no doubt led to an exquisite sampling of local cuisine.
Penelope wore a tight red dress and heels during a break with her husband from maternal duties. In January, Penelope gave birth to the couple's first child, Leo, in Los Angeles.

This isn't Eva's first trip to her beau's homeland. She's been there before shooting on location for work. Something it appears this visit most definitely was not.

10 Reasons Latinos Are Taking Over Hollywood!

Tom Hanks' appearance on the Spanish-language show, Despierta America this morning had quite a few people saying "que?" Why is a major American movie star like Hanks (who doesn't even speak Spanish) visiting a morning show on a Spanish-language network? The answer is an easy one: Latinos have arrived in Hollywood! Don't believe us? Here are 10 reasons Latinos are taking over Hollywood!

We Have the Biggest Teen Stars on Earth

Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Victoria Justice, and Bella Thorne — they’re the biggest female teen stars on the planet right now, and they’re all Latinas! Selena, who recently finished filming the final episode of her hit Disney series, Wizards of Waverly Place has a new movie career, a blazing hot music career (her third album, When The Sun Goes Down drops on June 29th) — and she happens to be dating the biggest male teen star in the universe: Justin Bieber! Selenita’s fellow Mexicana, Demi Lovato, who is widely respected for her musical talents, is currently recording a new album, while Disney's new princess, Bella Thorne has her own star vehicle with Disney's hit show, Shake It Up! And Boricua Victoria Justice — the only one from this group who's not a Disney alum — is also a Hollywood fixture. Justice has her own hit Nickelodeon show, Victorious, she's currently recording her debut album, and she just got cast as the lead in the coming of age comedy, Fun Size, which is being directed by Josh Schwartz (creator of Gossip Girl and The OC).

Attack of the Latino Teen Stars

We're the Most Beautiful

In April, People Magazine named Jennifer Lopez (not Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Anniston or Megan Fox), the most beautiful woman in the world. La Lopez looked positively radiant on the cover of the magazine's annual most beautiful issue and more importantly, for once the most beautiful face in America is one that Latinas will recognize as one of their own.

CONFIRMED: Jennifer Lopez Named People Magazine's Most Beautiful Woman

We Bring the Funny
We don't know about you, but our favorite scenes from FOX's hit show, Glee are the hilarious one-liners that Puerto Rican actress, Naya Rivera cold-heartedly delivers week after week as the uber-bitchy cheerio-turned-gleek, Santana Lopez. From "I'm a closet Lesbian and a judgemental bitch, which means one thing: I have awesome gaydar," to "Legend has it that when I came out of my mother I told the nurse she was fat," to our absolute favorite of all-time: "The only straight I am is straight-up bitch," all of Naya's witticisms are equally hurtful to the person she's insulting (but to us, they're just funny!). Meanwhile, on ABC's hit comedy, Modern Family, no one cracks us up more than Sofia Vergara, who always seems to have a stumped, 'what do you mean?' expression on her face as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, a character whose level of naiveté makes her a cross between George W. Bush and Steve Urkel. In other words, she's comedy gold!

We're the New American Idol!

Over the last ten years, we've come close to winning FOX’s American Idol several times (David Archuleta, Alison Iraheta, Syesha Mercado), but in 2011 — with a superstar Latina (Jennifer Lopez) at the judges table — part-Puerto Rican country singer, Scotty McCreery finally made history when he became the first Latino ever to win the hit FOX competition. After he won, Scotty —  whose father was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico — had this message for his Latino fans. "I love ya'll. I've got a quarter of ya'll in me, and it was really cool to get up there and sing for all of you. We'll see if my flavor that Jennifer {Lopez} talked about keeps on going!"

La Reina del Sur is a bad title for Kate Del Castillo's Telemundo telenovela. It ought to be called, La Reina de Televisión. In March, the primetime Spanish-language soap beat ALL English language programing in major cities like New York and LA in the ratings and regularly beat the major networks (ABC, CBS and NBC) among adults 18-34. Attribute the soap's success to the fact that Hispanics now make up more than 16% of the U.S. population, and that Hispanics watch more TV on average than other Americans, and you'd be right. But it's not just Latinos watching Spanish-language soaps anymore — Spanish-language networks now offer subtitles to their programs for non-Spanish speakers. The rest of America is learning what we learned from abuela (and Thalia) as children: telenovelas are addictive and fun.

We're Getting More TV Channels in Español
Encore! Encore! People love Latinos on television so much, whether it's in English or Spanish, that they're asking for more of us, and with recent census data showing that 1 in 6 adults (and 1 in 4 children) in America is Latino, networks are beginning to target the fast growing U.S. Hispanic population. Last month, the Starz network announced that come August 1st, it will launch a Spanish-language premium movie channel called Encore Espanol and in May, leading Spanish-language network Univision — which is already a Spanish-language network — announced plans to launch three additional new networks titled Univision TL Novelas, Univision Deportes, and Univision 24/7, which will focus exclusively on telenovelas, sports, and news, respectively, and bow in 2012. Translation: We already live in a multi-channel universe, but it's time for America to get ready for a multi-channel Spanish-language universe!

We'll Be the Judge!

They say that behind every great man is a great woman. But Boricua Jennifer Lopez and Colombiana, Christina Aguilera aren't hiding behind any men as the feature premiere judges of FOX's American Idol and NBC's The Voice respectively. In fact, although J.Lo and Christina are surrounded by a sea of hombres on their respective shows (Christina's fellow judges include Cee-Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, while Lopez's co-judges are Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson), the superstar Latinas get top billing on TV's biggest singing competitions — often getting the last word over their male counterparts. Hollywood is clearly leaving the judging to us!

We're Getting Our Stories Told

In the last two or three years, there have been more Latino-centric story lines on TV, both on cable and network shows. The second season of HBO's Eastbound & Down was set in Mexico and welcomed Latino stars Ana de la Reguera and Michael Pena, Entourage recently did a story line about a Mexican tequila business that Turtle (A.J. Ferrara) gets involved with, and during its fifth season, Showtime's hit serial killer drama, Dexter featured a story line about Santa Muerte Murders set in a predominately Venezuelan neighborhood. Other shows that have featured Latino-centric story lines include Showtime's Weeds (where Mary Louise Parker's character Nancy Botwin got involved with Mexican drug lords), and Off the Map, a medical drama for ABC set in the South American jungle. The new season of HBO's hit series, True Blood, (premiering this Sunday), will feature a story line about a brujero (Kevin Alejandro) who dabbles in dark magic.

We're Making It Easier to Shoot in Puerto Rico & The DR

Don't be surprised if more and more films start shooting in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. In March, Governor Luis G. Fortuño of Puerto Rico approved new legislation that revamps its program, offering the U.S. tax rebates along with a 20 % rebate for non-residents including the pre-existing 40% rebate for residents. The new incentives are likely to prompt film producers in Hollywood to shoot their films on the Puerto Rican island. In a similar move, the Dominican Republic is officially launching its own production incentive program this month in an effort to lure more productions to the Caribbean. According to Variety, the program's key elements provide a 25% transferable tax credit for features and TV series shot in the country, with $500,000 minimum to qualify and an expedited customs process.

Is Puerto Rico the Next Hollywood?

We're Raking in the Cash
In 2010, Cameron Diaz was the second highest paid actress in Hollywood (behind Sandra Bullock), while Eva Longoria was the highest paid Latina on television, pulling in an impressive $400,000 for each episode of ABC's Desperate Housewives. But it's not just Latina actresses who command big salaries — Latina supermodels also rake in big salaries. In fact, Gisele Bundchen, and Adriana Lima are currently the highest paid models in the industry.

Eva Longoria lobbies against child labor in the U.S.

Something we love about Eva Longoria is her call to duty by way of activism. The woman appears to be a tireless champion of noble causes that seek the well-being and equality of her fellow human beings. On her most recent call to action, the actress lobbied at our nation's capitol to fight for the rights of children laboring in work camps.

Unfortunately, the agricultural industry is one of the few in which child labor for minors age 12 and older is tolerated. Even more surprising is that there are no limits set on hours worked.

"What occurs in work camps in this country is a tragedy. We can't let this continue in the United States," Longoria said.

In September 2009, the CARE (Children's Act for Responsible Employment) bill was introduced to Congress. The law would establish harsh penalties for employers not complying with child labor laws and impose a five-year prison term for those who willfully and repeatedly violate child labor laws that would result in the serious injury or death of a child.

The law would also raise the standards regulating the level of pesticides child laborers are exposed to. "Children laboring in the fields do so at a young age and for longer hours than their peers working in other industries. We have to end this unacceptable double standard," said California Democratic Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, the main proponent of the bill.

The film 'The Harvest,' produced by Longoria, focuses precisely on the subject. 'The Harvest' examines the daily lives of migrant children working under such conditions, focusing on three Latino children ages 12, 14 and 16. The children are among an estimated 400,000 toiling in the United States.

The film shows how the three travel thousands of miles with their families, dealing with extreme weather conditions, apart from the dangers involved in their odysseys and the pain and emotional disconnection brought on from the children's separation from family and loved ones.
