Event promotes dance for better health, fitness

SEGUIN — Amanda Gold wants Seguin to see dance in a whole new light.

Gold, owner of Suzi Hughson School of Dance, said moving to music has long been considered an art form, but people are also beginning to recognize dance’s other benefits.

“If people knew how intense dance is, they would see how athletic it is in nature,” she said. “Last year’s ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ (SYTYCD) winner was sponsored by Gatorade, and it was the first time that dance was recognized as a sport.”

Moving to the beat is a fun way to exercise, Gold said.

“Dancing is a great way to get fit and get healthy,” Gold said. “You can dance anywhere. I dance in the store while I am waiting in line to check out.”

In an effort to help promote the activity, SYTYCD started Dance 4 Your Life with sponsorships from the Dizzy Feet Foundation and the Larry King Cardiac Foundation.

Dance 4 Your Life is an event that will be going on simultaneously across the country at all of the Six Flags locations on July 30.

“Normally, you would be able to go to Six Flags and take part,” she said. “But this year, we decided to have one in town on the same day. We’re going to do the same dances that you would do at Fiesta Texas.”

Gold will be leading a dance at the Central Park bandstand that was choreographed by Mary Murphy, SYTYCD judge.

“The one that we will be doing is a salsa, which anybody that is doing Zumba would get a kick out of,” Gold said. “We might be able to demonstrate another dance that might be fun and that one is kind of hip-hop based.”

Gold felt that offering the gathering a little closer to home opened the event for more people.

“I liked the idea and it sounded fun,” she said. “What better way to promote getting fit and getting up off the couch. If I can be out there doing this at 30 weeks pregnant, anybody can do it.”

The dancing will be from 9-11 a.m. and participants will receive a D4YL bracelet.

The event is free and open to all ages.

“You don’t have to be a student of dance, a professional dancer or even an athletic person. It is open to anybody, any age,” Gold said.

Larry King joins NOH8 campaign for gay marriage

Former CNN host Larry King has posed for a NOH8 photograph to raise awareness for marriage equality. He also filmed a soon-to-be-released advertisement calling on president Barack Obama to support the calls for gay marriage.

King is shown in the adverts with duct tape across his mouth and ‘NOH8′ written on his cheek. NOH8 is the name of the campaign against Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in California.

Earlier this year, the NOH8 campaign wrote a letter to president Obama which has been signed by gay celebrities including Rufus Wainwright, Ellen and Portia DeGeneres and Glee star Jane Lynch, together with straight celebrity Martin Sheen and Marc Pincus, the chief executive of Zynga, the home of FarmVille and CityVille.

Forbes 2011 #1 Billionaire Unveils his Soumaya Museum in Mexico

Mexican born-billionaire Carlos Slim Helu, who ranked #1 at the recently released list of Forbes Billionaires List for 2011 with a net worth of #74 billion shows his passion and love for art as he unveils a new “public” art museum in Mexico.

The “Soumaya Museum” which was named after his late wife is situated at Plaza Carso, west of Mexico City. It has a distinct shape designed by Carlos’ architect son-in-law Fernando Romero  (no news yet that talk about the shape) and walled with octagon shape silver bricks. It is said to house over 60,000 art collection of Carlos and some were identified as works of famous world artists like Rodin, Leonardo da Vinci and other European artists.

It will also feature some works of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros.
The Soumaya Museum is said to be one part of an 800-million-dollar urban development project called Plaza Carso to help boost Mexico tourism and at the same time gives Mexican an additional job opportunity.

Carlos Slim was not only famous because of his money but his ladder of success is mostly the talk of the blogosphere because of the way he made his fortune.  Although it has been said that Carlos had a cushy life growing up because her father is already a wealthy man, his struggle to mark his own name in the industry is somewhat phenomenal.

After finishing his studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Carlos follows his father’s footsteps and began investing in multiple businesses like the other businessmen do but he is one of the rarest person to in invest in companies when the market was weak or undergoing a recession crisis. When the economy isn’t doing so well, it can be nerve-wracking trying to decide what to do with your money. Soon enough these businesses became base of his conglomerate Grupo Carso.

“By using some business tactics and savvy negotiating Slim was able to purchase companies at extremely low prices and have a say in their various interests. With strong management skills Slim was able to increase their value exponentially in the next ten years,” according to an analyst.

The risk that he had taken certainly paid off as he is now the number 1 billionaire in the world for two consecutive years crushing down two of the world’s big names: Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.

And now, he is sharing with the world with the richness he has now by donating to some charity and other foundations and helping his home Mexico to be one of the tycoon countries in the world in the future.
