Dancing With the Stars: J.R. Martinez Cries, Pays Tribute to Military & Gets Standing Ovation

J.R. Martinez bared his soul on Dancing With The Stars – opening up about his third degree burns he received while serving in Iraq.

On the show's "Personal Week," Martinez broke down in tears after finishing his rumba with partner Karina Smirnoff to Tim McGraw's "If You're Reading This," a song dedicated to the wives of fallen military men.

The judges and the audience, taken aback with emotion as well, gave the couple a long standing ovation.

"I think the clear message behind that is that people really appreciate our men and women in the military," Martinez said. "I’ve never cried in front of that many people before. I can honestly say it’s the biggest stage I’ve ever cried on."

He went into detail about his accident, describing how a land mine blew up the Humvee he was in. The veteran/actor used that emotion to earn a solid 26 points – 30 is the highest possible score – putting him behind only Ricky Lake, who earned a 27.

"Tonight, you did something extraordinary. You touched us all," a teary eyed Carrie Ann Inaba told Martinez. "I could feel the weight with which you danced. That was one of the most profound, honest dances I've ever seen."

Len Goodman thought it was "a wonderful dance," a sentiment echoed by Bruno Tonioli.

"I could feel every emotion," Tonioli said. "You dance from the heart."

Dancing With the Stars: J.R. Martinez & Ricky Lake Jump, Jive and Wail Ahead

With magnetism and charisma, J.R. Martínez and Karina Smirnoff delivered an energetic and entertaining jive performance on the second week of DWTS Monday night.

DWTS judge Bruno Tonioli declared Martínez and Smirnoff's number as "the most satisfying overall performance of the night."

Last week, fellow judge Len Goodman told Martínez he gave one “the best performances of the night.”

"It was a great dance," Goodman told Martínez Monday evening clearly satisfied with his moves once again.

With funky suspenders, hops and swings right on cue, Martínez and Smirnoff took over the ballroom, never shying away smiles proving they got what it takes on the dance floor.

Tonioli added his thoughts on Martínez being a natural dancer. He congratulated the army vet turned actor.

"J.R., you're born to dance!" Tonioli said excitedly. "Right on it, all the way through!"

Dance extraordinaire, Carie Ann Inaba fully agreed with Tonioli.

"It was great, it was fantastic," said Inaba. "That was fun."

Former talk show host Ricky Lake, who last week admitted she has a hard crush on Martínez, went head-to-head with the Salvadorian for the top score.

“You're the first person tonight who did the flicks and kicks correctly,” Tonioli told Lake.

Lake, 43, appeared to be having fun and was told by Inaba that she had the "best jive of the night.”

Dance Fitness Classes Continue in Popularity at Health Clubs

With the popularity of Zumba, Batuka and dance classes developed by high-profile choreographers and dancers, such as Louis Van Amstel’s LaBlast classes for Crunch, pre-choreographed dance-based programs continue to offer group fitness options for health club operators.

Last November, in its list of top 10 fitness trends for 2011, the American Council on Exercise said that dance classes, which have been gaining popularity for years, would continue to be a major draw at health clubs. That popularity might be the result of the recent abundance of dance-related TV shows, such as FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance” and ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” says Juliane Arney, owner of Arney Fitness Consulting and a dance instructor and choreographer who has developed classes for 24 Hour Fitness and Crunch.

Amstel, who has danced or choreographed on both of those programs, developed LaBlast, his own cardio dance fitness program for Crunch, two years ago. The hour-long class is offered at different levels, which allows beginners to learn dance skills and coordination and to burn calories. Participants can progress to more difficult dance levels as they improve and want a challenge. LaBlast is Crunch’s most popular dance class and will soon be offered at other facilities owned by New Evolution Ventures, Crunch’s parent company.

“It’s dance fitness based on all different dance styles, every genre of music—cha cha, salsa, jive. All the dances that people see on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ I have in the LaBlast program,” Amstel says.

The variety and the fun of the program prevent participants from getting bored.

“It is a fun way of still getting the health benefits and the workout benefits without hitting the wall. It’s the diversity of movement to your favorite music,” says Amstel, who describes LaBlast as a workout in disguise.

He credits the program’s success to taking the intimidation factor out of dancing by keeping routines simple and using encouraging instructors that have a background in both fitness and dance.

“Sometimes I feel that fitness instructors in general lose their patience,” Amstel says. ”And it’s the patience that’s really the key for people who think they can’t get through it.”

Arney agrees that instructors play a vital role in making dance fitness classes a success.

“Dance programming, even more so than anything else, is instructor based,” says Arney. “If you’re going to put dance or Zumba on your schedule and it hits hard, you have to think about what you’re going to channel those people into next. Zumba is bringing thousands of new consumers and instructors into the group fitness market, but what are we going to do with them when they’re tired of Zumba?”

She says that Batuka, a program that debuted last year at IHRSA’s show, could be the next big thing in dance fitness. The music is produced specifically for the program by Grammy Award-winning writer and producer Kike Santander, which eliminates the risk of participants getting sick of hearing the same music in class that they hear on the radio.

Regardless of where dance fitness goes in the future, its strong appeal to the female demographic and continuing popularity make it a strong investment in any facility.

“I think the cool part about dance workouts, especially right now with TV and popular culture, is that they’re like a gateway drug,” says Arney. “They are the things that get a lot of people into exercising in the first place. That’s such a huge value because simple, fun dance classes like Zumba are an entry point for a whole population that hasn’t been moving before. Dance might be your first point of entry, but let’s not stop there.”

Brooke Burke and David Charvet: Married!

Dancing With the Stars co-host Brooke Burke and David Charvet, her longtime partner and fiance, got married last night, according to reports.

The location: On a boat under the stars off the coast of St. Bart's, with their kids. Hard to imagine a more special moment for the couple, both 39.

"We're just at that place, where love is deep and meaningful, and we're feeling very settled," Brooke said of their relationship earlier this year.

Burke began dating Charvet, who starred on Baywatch and the original Melrose Place, in 2005. He proposed to her just one year later, in 2006.

They are parents to daughter Heaven Rain, 4, and son Shaya Braven, 3. Burke has two daughters, Neriah, 11, and Sierra, 9, with ex-husband Garth Fisher.

In an interview with THG earlier this year, Brooke spoke about her "celebrity mom" status and making time for both herself and her relationship with David, despite challenges posed by balancing her career and four kids.

It's a busy life, but no doubt, it seems like it couldn't be going better for her. Congratulations to the newlyweds and to the entire family!

‘Dancing With the Stars’ recruiting talent

The Dancing With the Stars committee has been meeting regularly since April, planning the next Richmond County Hospice fund raising extravaganza.

“Last year’s Dancing With the Stars was such an overwhelming success, we’re very excited about doing it again this year,” said Lisa Ledford, Richmond County Hospice Business Development Coordinator.

$15,000 was raised last year, and event organizers are hoping for another huge hit.

“All the money raised goes to patients and families being served by Richmond County Hospice,” said Ledford. “We are the only local, non-profit Hospice in the county.”

The committee is lining up “A Taste of Richmond,” spreads from several restaurants, to be served at the event. A wine tasting is also a possibility.

Tickets to attend the event are $60 per couple, or $35 for single tickets.

“We had a pretty packed house last year,” said Ledford. “People had so much fun they were asking us when the next one would be, as they were on their way out the door.”

This year’s event will be held on November 5, at Cole Auditorium.

There is no entree fee for dancers, but each team pledges to raise funds from sponsors.

Last years winners were Kimberly Harrington and Bruce Stanback, who did the Salsa to Pitbull’s song, “I Know You Want Me.”

“We had a fantastic time,” said Harrington. “I’m a big fan of the TV show, ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ so when I was approached to participate, I didn’t think twice. Bruce and I had one professional Salsa lesson and then created our own routine. It was thrilling to win the disco ball trophy, especially since it was for a good cause. My first experience with Hospice was with my stepfather in 1995. The concept of Hospice was new to us, but my family grew to appreciate the nature of the agency and developed close ties to the staff that have lingered through the years.”

A few of the contestants confirmed for this year are: Dr. Fred McQueen, and Layla Mabe - who are signed up to Tango; John and Sharon Hutchinson; Amy Simmons; and Susan Sellers.

“There are several more on the list who aren’t confirmed yet,” said Ledford. “And we are still recruiting!”

Any style of ballroom dancing is permitted in the contest. This includes dances like: Tango; Waltz; Rumba; Samba; Mambo; Foxtrot; and Cha Cha.

“Sharon Nichols, with Liberty Place, offers dance lessons to couples who want to participate,” Ledford said.

For more information on the event, contact Lisa Ledford at 910-997-4464.
