We were all shocked (shocked!) when we heard about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s affair with his Guatemalan housekeeper Mildred Particia Baena. His wife, Maria Shriver, seems determined to get a divorce, while Baena has remained silent and kept herself out of the public eye.
It got us thinking about all the celebs we know who have survived scandals. Some have even managed to convert their notoriety to popularity and leveraged their mistakes to the advantage of their careers.
Take a trip down memory lane with us...
Dayanara Torres
Torres survived a highly publicized divorce from her hubby of almost four years Marc Anthony with her head held high—even when he married international pop star Jennifer Lopez just days after their paperwork was finalized. If there is a model for how to behave in the public eye after divorce, she would be it. Since the split in 2004, Torres has refused to say anything negative to the press about her ex-husband or his new wife and has made sure that her children with the salsa crooner have healthy relationships with everyone in the large, mixed family. In 2008 she wrote a self-help book called Married to Me, which she said she was inspired to create when she failed to find useful advice to help her get through her own divorce.
Michelle Rodriguez
M.Rod has had her share of ups and downs, but the Dominican/Puerto Rican actress always seems to rise above the drama. But back on December 1, 2005, Rodriguez was arrested on DUI charges while filming for Lost and eventually served 18 days of jail after she was found to be in violation of her probation in 2007. We were a bit worried she might not be able to climb her way back to the top of the Hollywood game, but boy, were we wrong! Since then, Rodriguez has made a concerted effort to clean up her image and put a stop to all the hard partying that kept getting her in trouble. She landed a role in the highest grossing film of all time (Avatar), reprised her role as Letty in the smash hit Fast & Furious series and is currently working on her own screenplay.
Paulina Rubio
Paulina Rubio has always had a reputation as a hard partying musician, but when she was rejected for U.S. citizenship due to positive drug tests, it no longer seemed like it was all fun and games. In 2007, the then 36-year-old and her husband Nicolas Vallejo-Nagera allegedly applied for a visa at the U.S. consulate in Juarez, Mexico, but were rejected when the tests came back positive for marijuana use, while Vallejo-Najera's also showed results for ecstasy and cocaine. Paulina’s reps denied the reports and Rubio was eventually granted citizenship and now lives in Miami with her hubby and their baby boy, Andrea Nicolas. She is currently planning to release a bilingual album in 2011/2012.
Jackie Guerrido
The scandal between Don Omar and his (ex?) wife Jackie Guerrido may have ironically enough, been the best thing that ever happened to the Univision weather girl’s career. After marrying the reggaeton star on April 19, 2008 in a lavish, star-studded affair in Puerto Rico, just over a year later, Don Omar was banned from the Univision studios after reportedly going ballistic during a fight with his new wife. All the drama hasn’t really hurt her career at all, if anything it elevated her profile! She is still the weather girl for Univision’s Primer Impacto and in 2010, Guerrido participated in Mira Quien Baila! coming in second place.
Corina Villaraigosa
As the daughter of devout Roman Catholic parents, we doubt Corina ever imagined her 1987 marriage would end in divorce. But after extensive media coverage exposed an ongoing affair that her husband, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (who changed his name as a symbol of their “fidelity”), was having with Telemundo journalist Mirthala Salinas, she had little choice but to file papers. It wasn’t the first time that there were reports of infidelity and their marriage had already weathered many a storm. The Villaraigosas’ first breakup happened back in 1994, when Corina filed for divorce after learning that her husband had an affair while she was undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer. Since the divorce was finalized in 2010, Corina has stayed out of the public eye.
Jennifer Lopez
Remember when Lopez was dating Sean 'Puffy' Combs? Yeah, it was hard for us to recall too, but it happened, and it all came to a head in a dangerous gun battle outside of a NYC nightclub back on December 27, 1999 that left three people wounded. Jennifer and Puffy were both charged with criminal possession of a gun, though charges against Lopez were almost immediately dropped due to lack of evidence and she was released. Obviously, J.Lo rose above the incident and has since maintained an incredibly lucrative (and scandal-free) career in music, film and television. She was recently named #50 on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list.
Jenni Rivera
Wherever La Diva de la Banda goes, drama follows. She told us so herself in her May cover story: “I wish I could be like Mary J. Blige,” she told writer Grace Bastidas. “No more drama. I’m always done with it, but drama’s not done with me. I’m used to it.” To what is she referring? In June 2008, she spent a few hours in jail for hitting a fan with a mic during a concert in Raleigh, N.C. after he reportedly threw a beer can onstage. Also in 2008, a personal sex tape was stolen from her home and made its rounds on the Internet. Last year, the mother of five stood by her son Michael after he was arrested for allegedly having sex with a minor. But has all that slowed down her success? Not one bit. Take, for instance, Jenni Rivera Enterprises, a hugely profitable company that includes a fragrance and cosmetics line, a jeans and sportswear line, and TV production (I Love Jenni, on mun2).
Perez Hilton
Perez Hilton has seen his fair share of scandal since starting “Hollywood’s Most Hated Website.” But he really got in trouble when he posted a photo of Demi Moore’s daughter alongside the quote, “Tallulah Willis, 15, dressing like a slut! Look at her boobs!" Demi understandably went ballistic, threatening to sue him for promoting child pornography. We’d like to say he learned his lesson, but just a few months later, he posted a photo of 17-year-old Miley Cyrus climbing out of a SUV in a short white dress. Though Hilton insisted he did not choose the photo because it looked like she wasn’t wearing underwear, the gossip blogger caught a ton of flack. At the 2009 Much Music Awards in Toronto, the blogger was punched in the face in a confrontation involving Fergie (or whom he used to call “Fugly”). His attacker was reportedly her bandmate Will.i.am’s manager. Since then, Perez has changed the tone of his popular website after taking on the cause of gay teen bullying. "Over the last week and a half a lot of people have said that I am a hypocrite,” he said in October of 2010. “That I'm one of the biggest bullies out there, and there is truth to that…I need to change, and I'm going to start today." And he has. Bravo!
