Dance lessons spice things up

Things are once again heating up at West Vancouver’s Ferry Building Gallery.

Recently, the cultural hotspot launched its annual spicy summer dance program, Salsa by the Sea, for the sixth year running.

The classes, which take place Thursdays until the end of August, offer North Shore residents a chance to experience the music, rhythms, and dance of Latin America in a picturesque setting — Ambleside Beach.

Ruth Payne, the gallery’s visual arts coordinator, says dancers of all ages are welcome to come learn all the right moves in a supportive environment.

“It’s very casual. You can show up in your running shoes if you want,” says Payne.

“We’ve had people from ages four to 96. We’ve had singles and we’ve had couples. You can come not knowing a single step, and within half an hour you’ll be in the groove.”

The lessons run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and the cost is $6. Each week, instruction is led by renowned Peruvian dance instructor Doris Angela Maria.

“She’s probably the best salsa dancer in Vancouver,” says Payne, a long-time student.

Payne says on a night with good weather, the lessons can draw up to 100 people to Ambleside Landing near the pier. Most come to dance, but some gather just to watch she says.

“It’s always a lot of fun,” she says. “It’s all about the rhythm. I don’t think there’s anyone who can resist Latin music. It’s very soulful.”

For more information on Salsa by the Sea visit www.ferrybuildinggallery.com, email gallery@westvancouver.ca, or call 604-925-7290.

The gallery is located at 1414 Argyle Street in West Vancouver.

Cloris Leachman: 'Light on Her Feet' Kirstie Alley Will Win 'Dancing'

Hollywood veteran Cloris Leachman is convinced Kirstie Alley will win this season's 'Dancing With the Stars,' telling me she's been pleasantly surprised at how graceful the full-figured actress has been.

"I was surprised how light she is on her feet," Cloris told me on the red carpet at the TV Land Awards on Sunday. "She's going to go much further than I went in the competition and I think she is going to win."

That's high praise from Cloris, who famously shimmied her then 82-year-old body to seventh place in the 2008 season. Three years later, the Oscar winner hasn't stopped dancing.

She glided up and down the red carpet several times before taking the stage to accept an award with her ''Facts of Life' cast, including Charlotte Rae, Geri Jewell, Mindy Cohn and Kim Fields.

Busy Cloris is currently starring as Maw Maw in the FOX series 'Raising Hope' and admitted to me she only saw the first couple of episodes of this 'Dancing' season.

So while Cloris believes Kirstie has been graceful, she may change her tune after Monday's performance when the 'Cheers' star temporarily lost her shoe during a routine with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

"I'm not doing a sitcom," Alley told TV Squad after Monday's show. "I'm actually doing a dance show. I'm tired of having to recover. I would just like to do something right. I don't feel like I'm jinxed. I just need to get my [act] together. There's something going on. Our rehearsals are swell. We're bitchin' in rehearsals."

What Is Ballroom and Latin Dancing?

Ballroom dancing consist of two main branches:

1. American Style Ballroom Dancing
2. International Style Ballroom Dancing

American Ballroom dancing is composed of two subcategories. Those two categories are American Style Smooth and American Style Rhythm. American Style Smooth is composed of Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz. American Style Rhythm is composed of Rumba, East Coast Swing, Cha Cha, Bolero, and Mambo.

International Ballroom Dancing is composed of international standard and international latin. International Standard is Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, and Quickstep. International Style Latin is composed of Rumba, Cha Cha, Samba, Paso Doble, and Jive.

A large percentage of the techniques and figures overlap from international style dancing to American style dancing. At a social level a good follower should be able to follow international style figures even if they're trained in American style, and a good international style dancer should be able to follow American style figures even if they've been trained in international.

In the competitive world, international style dancing is more popular around the world. What's considered to be the championship of ballroom and latin dancing, is held in Blackpool England every year and held in International Style Dancing.

If you are learning how to dance for social reasons, you will want to learn some other dances that are outside the scope of traditional ballroom. Those dances are salsa, merengue, bachata, and west coast swing. Across the USA, those 4 dances have become extremely popular and are critical to learning if you are interested in learning social dance. Within the American social ballroom world, two of the most commonly danced dances within traditional ballroom are Waltz, Tango, Rumba, East Coast Swing, and Cha Cha. If you are interested in learning how to dance, you will want to figure out your goals. If your goal is to go out dancing at a local latin dance club, you will want to learn salsa, merengue, bachata.

Ballroom dancing is a ton of fun and has become increasingly popular in the USA. I encourage you to try it and see if you like it. It is a great hobby that may be able to help you to stay in shape and enjoy life just a little bit more.

Alex is a professional ballroom and latin dance instructor and offers dance lessons to people in the Chicago Illinois and Naperville Illinois area in Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Salsa, Swing, Cha Cha, Rumba, and More!

Salsa celebration: Dance night welcomes beginners as well as experts

Women in high strappy sandals and men in dress shirts all groove to the same rhythm of blasting trumpets and soul-shaking drums. Even the most timid pull their hands out of their pockets and break away from the bar to attempt some sultry steps.

Perlé is bringing the New York salsa scene to downtown New Brunswick.

Every Thursday, the small Paterson Street nightclub trades in its Top 40 playlist for the pulsating beat of salsa. Started in 2009 as a response to the growing interest in Latin dancing and music, the salsa-themed dance night attracts enthusiasts of all skill levels.

A beginner's class kicks off the festivities at 9 p.m., when instructors from the Highland Park-based Scarlet Mambo Latin Dance Studio, which promotes the weekly event, teach basic steps and turns.

"The nightclub is the perfect place for people to be exposed to Latin music and dance," said Dany Joshua, artistic director for Scarlet Mambo. "There are classes around here, but this is a place where they can learn and be social."

The hour-long class shows dancers how to transition from move to move and add their own flavor.

"Do a different pose every time, make it your own," Joshua urged a group of about 30 people earlier this month.

Later, as the lights go down and the music turns up, the floor is not empty for long. Dancers show off fierce footwork, dizzying turns and hip rolls that would give professionals a run for their money. The sophisticated crowd ranges from mid-20s to early-50s, all displaying fascinating styles of Latin movement and rhythm.

Though you may feel more comfortable bringing a partner along, don't be afraid to go solo, since it's not uncommon for a stranger to ask someone to dance. The low-pressure environment is ideal for dancers of all levels to watch, improve their skills and soak up the culture.

There's enough seating to perch on after you've built up a sweat from the fast-paced choreography. But pay attention as you make your way across the floor, in order to avoid collisions -- it's easy to get tangled up in twirling couples.

Rose-colored lighting adds a warm and exotic vibe to the crimson and chocolate-brown space, which shimmers with pearl white furniture. The main room serves as the dance floor while the secondary bar often hosts bands and provides a more intimate lounge atmosphere for conversation.

Melanie Thompson, 31, of Highland Park said she has been coming to the salsa night for about three weeks and couldn't think of a better place to learn and socialize.

"It's all about moving and feeling good and knowing your own vitality," she said. "Plus, technically, everyone's learning here, so there's not as much pressure."

Richard Reque, 43, of Plainfield, said it was hard to find a place to salsa without trekking to New York, but the salsa night ensured a full dance card each week.

"It's very friendly," he said. "We share the desire to dance and show off the steps that we've learned and really have a good time."

Jorge Palomino, 28, of Milltown came to the salsa night for the first time and said it was exciting to see salsa in motion outside of class.

"I like that you can see beginners and professionals dancing together," Palomino said. "It's cool to actually show off what I'm learning and pick up steps from everyone else."

Dancing With the Stars Newbie Petra Nemcova Shares Her Strategy for the Season

squidoo

Technically, we are rooting for Kendra Wilkinson-Baskett on this season of Dancing With the Stars, what with her being our E! pal and colleague and all, but we just chatted up supermodel, philanthropist and tsunami survivor Petra Nemcova and her new partner Dmitry Chaplin, and we kinda fell in love. The Czech-born model and Russian-American pro dancer are an adorable, giggly pair and you can't help but adore their wholesome enthusiasm for rehearsal and refining Petra's technique. As it happens, being a model comes with some benefits (being beautiful and skinny, etc.) but Petra also revealed that her body is seriously struggling with the shift from the catwalk to the dancefloor:

Petra says, "As a model, you put your shoulder back and you go with your legs forward, and with dancing you have to go shoulders forward…I'm always arched so I have to really really think about putting my tailbone under and being straight." Dmitry, who is giving Petra a three-week crash course in all things dance said he saw a lot of problems with Petra's posture as soon as they met: "[I said] I'm just going to teach you how to walk…Just give me the hand: This is how we walk…She's back-weighted when she walks…the heel goes first and then the toe, and the hips are very loose, and that's how they walk on the [catwalk] but ballroom dancing is everything is forward, so [she's] kind of back to front."

In addition to posture and simple walking, Dmitry is also honing in on the little details that make a dancer great, telling us: "She never had dance experience before, so we had to start with things like 'how do you hold your pinkie?' "

The twosome also shared some of their strategy for optimizing their dances for the best scores from the judges. Dmitry says, "[A] definite strength is her height. Well, it plays both ways, it can be advantage or disadvantage…[Girls can] be afraid to be stretching and be taller…but like for example for ballroom dancing, when you're in closed hold especially, we can generate a lot of power from moving, and we can cover the floor in two steps, that's amazing. [It's] good for [impressing judge] Len [Goodman] actually, because he's English, and he likes the technical aspects so if we do a nice simple walk, a nicely flowing walk, he'll be like 'great score.' "

We also asked about what their costume plans are for the first two dances, and Petra told us, "For the first dance because it's a foxtrot, I think it will be something more elegant but connected to the modern days…well, for the second dance, there will be a little bit more of a reveal, since it's one of the Latin dances…Second dance, there will be more skin, let's say that."

So how does Stars veteran Dmitry rate Petra's chances? Says the So You Think You Can Dance season-two contestant, "I always say that shows like Dancing With the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance are not dance contests. Dancing is the language we speak, we communicate with dancing, but it's about showing the people who you are and if they appreciate it, they going to support you and support you all the way…And of course dancing part has to be there—you can't just rely on people's vote, but I think when people are going to get to know Petra they're going to fall in love with her. She's so sweet, so humble."

We agree! Check out the clips above and see for yourself, and then tell us in the comments which of this season's DWTS dance teams is your fave!

EXCLUSIVE: A Few of Our Brightest Stars Under 25!

Génesis Rodriguez, 23

When you’re the daughter of legendary Venezuelan singer and actor El Puma, you’re bound to attack stardom with ferocity. And sure enough, Rodriguez has quickly leapt from telenovelas to Hollywood. After an upcoming stint on Entourage, she’ll appear opposite Will Ferrell, Gael GarcĂa Bernal and Diego Luna in the comedy Casa de Mi Padre, and with Sam Worthington in the action flick Man on a Ledge.

Bruno Mars, 25

Until recently, you couldn’t turn a radio dial without hearing Mars’s megahit “Just the Way You Are.” Born Peter Gene Hernandez to Puerto Rican and Filipino parents, the seven-time Grammy nominee also cowrote others’ chart-toppers, like Flo Rida’s “Right Round” and Cee Lo Green’s “F--- You.”

Dora the Explorer

It’s hard to overstate Dora’s impact: For more than a decade, she’s taught millions of kids how to problem-solve, the importance of friendship and family, and even some Spanish skills. Best of all, her brown skin and culture are not the point of her animated show, but part of the background, making her as American as apple (or guava!) pie.

Jasmine Villegas, 17

Buzz, buzz, buzz! Mexican-and-Filipino Villegas has plenty of it, thanks to a scorching single, “All These Boys,” released last fall, a rumored romance with Justin Bieber (whose tour she joined in September) and a collaboration with the Jonas brothers.

Prince Royce, 21

As bachata kings Aventura ponder breaking up, there’s someone more than ready to take their crown. We’re referring, of course, to Bronx-born dominicano Geoffrey Royce Rojas, whose bilingual self-titled debut showcases silky-smooth vocals and savvy songs (including the irresistible “Stand By Me” remake and “CorazĂłn Sin Cara”) that signal the genre’s future.

Joan Smalls, 22

She may hail from the Puerto Rican town of Hatillo, but the modeling newbie already has a globe-trekking career. Smalls got her break last year after being featured as the exclusive model for Givenchy’s fall couture show in Paris, and then walked the runway for 40 top designers. Her It Girl status was recently cemented with an EstĂ©e Lauder contract.

Miguel, 24

His sexy voice and style gets right under your skin, leading Billboard to gush that the half-Mexican smoothie “offers both the sweetness of Babyface and the passion of R. Kelly.” Could Miguel be our first bonafide Latino R&B superstar since Maxwell?

Mark Sanchez, 24

Ever since signing a hefty $50 million contract with the NFL two years ago, the New York Jets quarterback has kept cool under pressure. In 2010, despite recovering from knee surgery, he posted his first career 300-yard passing game, emerging as a new kind of all-American athlete: a third-generation Mexican American profoundly proud of his roots.

Maya Gabeira,23

This big wave rider first hit the water as a way to refocus her life after being kicked out of home as a rebellious teen. Now the brasileña is a top female surfer and a four-time winner of the Billabong XXL Women’s Overall Performance Award. Not one to shy away from a challenge, she recently rode a 45-footer, setting the record for largest wave ever tackled by a woman.

Rafael Nadal, 24

The Spanish cutie dominated men’s pro tennis in 2010, when he became the seventh man to ever score a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. That was after experts said his knee problems would cut his career short. But as anyone who’s ever seen him play knows, knees have nothing to do with it: Nadal is all about heart.

Heather Hemmens, 22

To simply say that half–Costa Rican Hemmens is on the CW series Hellcats misses the full scope of her work. She’s directed and produced two short films, and intends to succeed both behind and in front of the camera. Ambitious? Yes, but then again, Hemmens has been on this path ever since attending a performing arts high school on a full scholarship.

Dance Salsa For Great Exercise After Age 60

Dancing is a fun and easy way to exercise and stay in shape and salsa is one of the fastest dances but the nice thing about Salsa is it can be done without a partner. It is also a great way for baby boomers over age 60 to meet new people and get some great exercise.

Dancing is a fun and easy way to exercise and stay in shape and salsa is one of the fastest dances but the nice thing about Salsa is it can be done without a partner.  It is also a great way for baby boomers over age 60 to meet new people and get some great exercise.

Ballroom dancing has become popular again over the last few years and many people have turned to Salsa as an alternative.  The dance name “Salsa” supposedly originated in New York but the steps probably developed from a combination of folk dances in Latin and Afro-American countries. In Mexico, salsa is a dance of flirtation. The woman will encourage her partner to come closer and then push him away, all the while moving her hips.  As the dance progresses, more arm movements are introduced.  Eventually, the male will bring his partner into a full embrace as the woman teases and pushes him away once again.

Children in Mexico are often taught at a very young age to move to the Latin music. They learn the basic salsa steps easily.  The easy count of 1,2,3 pause, 5,6,7 pause in a back and forth or side to side motion is simple to pick up.  Because the music is fast and light, it makes people smile listening to it and before long the feet are moving even without knowing the steps.

Many dance studios now offer beginner salsa lessons.  They encourage single people of all ages to come out and just have fun learning the dance. Even countries without high Latin populations have caught onto the Latin beat. It takes awhile for North Americans to get used to the sexy hip movements. It is a smooth dance where the feet are kept on the floor, rather than a bouncy movement occurring.

There are many exercise benefits to the dance of salsa.  It doesn’t take long to get the heart rate up with the fast beat.  The arm movements quickly firm upper arms and the hip movements are great for slimming down the waist.  Posture is also an important part of the dance.

Many resort areas like Puerto Vallarta and Playa Del Carmen offer lessons for the tourists.  Just google dance lessons to see what is available. The final benefit to taking lessons is the laughter and camaraderie as people of all ages try to learn the steps.

Shakira and Piqué snapped holding hands

On Sunday, new images surfaced of a very lovey-dovey Shakira and Gerard Piqué out for dinner, locking hands and smiling effusively.

In a matter of hours, the most sought after "it" couple appeared on the Internet, the media and even Shakira's Facebook page, where fans posted pictures that all but ruined a potential "scoop." Oops!

The online edition of El Pais reported that the images were captured outside a restaurant in Spain after a soccer match between Barcelona and the Athletic. Just outside the restaurant, six of the 15 photographers slated to snap shots of the couple together took their prized photos around 4:30 in the morning.

After word that a photograph of the pair engaged in a kiss would fetch millions, we imagine that paparazzi at the restaurant were saddened, if not a touch deflated, by the fact they couldn't cash in with the coveted "hot-handed" photos.

The images would've allegedly been nabbed exclusively by two magazines, but after a leak that the pair was at the restaurant, photos began to flood the Internet, which made obtaining the "hot-handed" jackpot a bit more difficult.

So now that the photos are out and an alleged romance appears obvious, should the pair announce their courtship publicly? First there were rumors to throw the scent of a possible love connection that went as far saying that Piqué was actually gay. Then subsequent reports say the pair is "just friends." Are they toying with the media? Anyway, have fun, kids!

How to Conquer Fear when Dancing Salsa

dipity
By: Czarina

Preparing your mind and body for dance is so important to ensure that you are not holding yourself back from enjoying the actual act of dancing. Have you had a time when you just wanted to dance so badly but then you didn’t do it because you felt that everyone else was better than you?   Well, the good news is that you are not alone or the first one to experience this fear.  Whether it’s at a wedding ceremony,  a dance club, events in school, etc. some people are so beset at the feeling of being humiliated and ashamed that they get embarrassed and hide wherever they can or simply walk away. It’s a pity because if you do this, then you are just keeping yourself from progressing or getting better at dancing.  The trick to any task or endeavour is repetition.  Everyone had to start clumsily but through it all it has resulted in some great dancers.

Enrolling in salsa dance classes will certainly help with your confidence and allow you to release those uncertainties through practicing in a controlled environment where everyone is starting at the same level.   So don’t put it off,  get out and dance! With great classes, great music and pleasant people, it’s entertaining and you will find that it is not complicated at all, but  you have to take that first step. There’s nothing to worry about, your Salsa Instructors have been trained and will break down the steps to make it easy for you to understand and learn them easily.  They will also teach you to focus on your technique, style, flow and not just learning step patterns. The step pattern is the fancy moves you make when you move on the floor. Technique and styling is what you look like and feel like when you do it.

You will be inspired by others in your class who are also Salsa enthusiasts as they share their ideas to improve the whole group.  It’s up to you to get as much as you can out of these classes and the supportive surroundings to ensure that you see improvement on a weekly basis.  The nice thing about it is that if you focus, you will actually see immediate improvement week over week. The more you practice and just focus on learning and growing, the more you defeat your fears and in turn the faster you progress.   Always keep in mind that experienced dancers were beginners before just like you. So  just relax, have fun and just enjoy the experience of what Salsa dancing is meant to be!

Helpful Benefits of Salsa Dance Group Lessons

By: Czarina Canlas

If you yearn for the excitement of Salsa Dancing, then why not take group lessons.  You don’t have to wait until you could afford private lessons because they can be quite expensive ranging from $60/hour to the hundreds of dollars.

Group lessons allow you to meet a diverse group of people from all walks of life that have the same interest as you in getting proficient in dancing Salsa. There are many different levels based on the school that ranges from beginner to advanced to performance training. In other words, there will be a level no matter what your experience with salsa dancing. The other benefit of group lessons is that it simulates a salsa dance club because it gives you a chance to dance with a mixture of partners, which improves lead and follow skills. Each level usually lasts 6-8 weeks depending on the school and you could expect to pay about $120.
salsaracing

If you are investing in classes, make sure that you are always punctual. Although there is always a review from the previous week, it does tend to move in a good pace and you don’t want to miss important new steps or spins that are taught. It is also important that you continue to practice at home so that you don’t forget what you learned by the following week.  Another good idea is to take a small camera so that you could actually record some of the moves and then you could practice them at home.

If you are looking for magical sparks in your life this holiday season, there are now numerous ways to suit your style to meet thousands of people.  Whether it be using technology by means of chatting with friends on Facebook, tweeting potential mates, match sites( like lavalife.com, match.com, matchmaker.com or plentyoffish.com), through Youtube, or many of the other hundreds of sites that are out there, all you seem to need these days is time and perseverance. If technology doesn't suit you, then there is still the traditional way to meet people by getting involved in activities that you love...and this includes Salsa dancing!

Salsa Dancing  has captivating  many people from absolute beginner through veteran dancers. It  usually begins with the, "would you like to dance?" first dance.  Based on chemistry, things just seem to evolve from there after each dance.  Of course, this does not mean that everyone is looking to meet someone as a great number of people are there just for the love of salsa dancing.  If anything, friendships do develop and dancers will introduce new partners to their friends and this is how the social network and circle of friends develops.

In most salsa clubs around the globe, you will dance with several partners in an evening. Having this familiar interest makes it easy to spark a conversation. While the music is playing, you feel the sound and rhythm pulsating through your body and at that moment of intense activity is when you feel that you and your partner are part of this intricate performance . This intensity and excitement will also get your heart pumping, your body in shape and your mind de-stressing. Anyone who has fallen in love with salsa dancing will tell you it has transformed their life. It captured their souls of many people who have tried it. It will change your perception in life, the people around you, and even yourself. So, wear your best salsa outfit, set aside your daily nuisances and hit the dance floor. You never know what romance awaits you.

Like thousands of others who have found the man or woman of their dreams through Salsa dancing. Who knows? You might be the next one to discover that lucky man or woman through Salsa dance. Wishing you all the best, good luck in blissful salsa dancing over the holidays!

Why do I love salsa dance? Salsa remains such an enjoyable social activity. Whether it be the intensity and excitement that you feel when you are on the dance floor dancing the night away or when you have just danced an hour straight and now you are ready to hold that fabulous drink on your hand. It all comes down to one thing, you are there for the passion of the music, for the love of Salsa dancing and of course to step into a totally different world that lets you escape life for one night.  Salsa dancing contributes to a lot of different aspects. It is an excellent form of exercise for the mind, body and soul. It’s that rush of being on top of the world!

According to BBC report, salsa is a good exercise because of its nippy tempo, with dancers burning 200 to 400 calories in a half-hour session. Whether you  choose to dance Bacchata, Merengue, Cha Cha, Cumbia, Tango, etc.,  dancing keeps your bones strong, helps people deal with their weight, and even helps to lower heart rate. Salsa has been proven to be a great form of exercise and is a great energy booster increasing endurance and stamina ,boosting weight loss, and helping the body release toxins naturally.

Did you know that through salsa dancing it can help you to cope with heartache, ease the pain of those who are experiencing divorce, cure boredom and above all give you that natural high. It also provides a safe and effective way to improve your mood and give you a greater sense of well being. In addition, dancing requires memorizing steps and working with a partner, both of which provide mental challenges that are vital for brain health.

So grab a friend or two and make those plans for Salsa dancing this weekend. Good luck and live the passion through Salsa!
