Too many Latinos?

redneckliberals
I’m sure you’ve heard the news that Hispanics now make up a record percentage of the American population. The U.S. Census says that one out of every six residents is Latino. Furthermore, in a “surprising show of growth, Hispanics accounted for more than half of the US population increase over the last decade.”

Yes, Latinos are the chief reason that America has avoided a population decline. However, not everyone is grateful, or particularly thrilled, about this fact. In fact, quite a few Americans are angry, anxious, or just plain freaked out over the ascendancy of Hispanics in the United States.

For example, a Texas demographer recently made headlines when he analyzed his state’s ethnic makeup and announced, “It’s basically over for Anglos.” Steve Murdock went on to imply that whites would be practically extinct in Texas within a few decades, adding, “It’s a terrible situation that you [Texas] are in. I am worried.”

Murdock later insisted that he was not pushing for ethnic cleansing. He explained that he was concerned about Latinos’ lower income levels, and in fact, he was advocating for improving the state of Hispanic education.

Even if we give Murdock the benefit of the doubt, his words certainly struck a chord with many Americans who don’t know the identity of their original immigrant ancestor. For such individuals, more Latinos is bad news indeed.

Now, some right-wing groups have been very clever about hiding their racial animosity. Being Latino recently ran an article about a network of organizations that have tried to connect rates of immigration (legal or otherwise) with environmental deterioration. And we know which ethnicity is most closely associated with immigration in America.

The message is clear: Americans who care about Mother Earth — and their own quality of life — have to keep the U.S. population as unchanged as possible. In addition to being xenophobic, however, this approach sidesteps reality. According to the Rand Corporation, it is countries that have the strictest immigration and naturalization policies (such as Japan) that may be in the most economic trouble in the future. Even if America magically stopped all immigration today, Hispanics would still drive population growth, by virtue of the fact that Hispanics tend to be younger and have more children than other groups.

Still, that has not stopped many Americans for advocating for taller fences, as if that will keep the Latino population low. These strategies often backfire. Witness the problems in Brownsville, Texas, where a Department of Homeland Security barrier is so twisty and arbitrary that it has left the homes of many US citizens “stranded on the other side of the fence.” Some Americans have seen their property cut off, and several complain that they “have to find a gap” in the fence to access their land.

We see now why it’s going to be over white people in Texas. Their state keeps fencing them out of the country and forcing them to hop a wall to get in.

Jennifer Lopez named 'Most Beautiful Woman'

NEW YORK, April 13 (UPI) -- People magazine has declared New York-born singer and actress Jennifer Lopez the World's Most Beautiful Woman.

Lopez, a mother of 3-year-old twins and judge on TV's "American Idol," appears on the cover of the magazine's Most Beautiful issue, on newsstands Wednesday.

Despite her glamorous image, the 41-year-old star said she doesn't wear any makeup when she's home with her husband singer Marc Anthony and their kids.

"That's when I'm my happiest," she said in an interview with the magazine. "Just being able to touch my face and rub my eyes and put my fingers in my hair and not having to worry about messing it up. It's so much better."

Lopez emphasized she works very hard to stay in shape.

"The thing is, it's part of my job," she said. "I don't want anybody thinking it's easy. It does take time and it's hard work. HDTV wide-screen is nobody's friend!"

Also featured in People's Most Beautiful issue are Zac Efron, Kellan Lutz, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Simpson, Eva Longoria and Jennifer Hudson.

Ryan Reynolds was named People's Sexiest Man Alive last November.

Jennifer Lopez is all smiles as she and her husband Marc Anthony appear at a news conference to announce "The Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony" collections in partnership with Kohl's department stores at The London West Hollywood Hotel in West Hollywood, California, on November 18, 2010. Kohl's will be the exclusive provider of the contemporary lifestyle brands in the U.S. and it will be available nationwide in Fall 2011, beginning with women's and men's apparel and accessories.

What Is Ballroom and Latin Dancing?

Ballroom dancing consist of two main branches:

1. American Style Ballroom Dancing
2. International Style Ballroom Dancing

American Ballroom dancing is composed of two subcategories. Those two categories are American Style Smooth and American Style Rhythm. American Style Smooth is composed of Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz. American Style Rhythm is composed of Rumba, East Coast Swing, Cha Cha, Bolero, and Mambo.

International Ballroom Dancing is composed of international standard and international latin. International Standard is Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, and Quickstep. International Style Latin is composed of Rumba, Cha Cha, Samba, Paso Doble, and Jive.

A large percentage of the techniques and figures overlap from international style dancing to American style dancing. At a social level a good follower should be able to follow international style figures even if they're trained in American style, and a good international style dancer should be able to follow American style figures even if they've been trained in international.

In the competitive world, international style dancing is more popular around the world. What's considered to be the championship of ballroom and latin dancing, is held in Blackpool England every year and held in International Style Dancing.

If you are learning how to dance for social reasons, you will want to learn some other dances that are outside the scope of traditional ballroom. Those dances are salsa, merengue, bachata, and west coast swing. Across the USA, those 4 dances have become extremely popular and are critical to learning if you are interested in learning social dance. Within the American social ballroom world, two of the most commonly danced dances within traditional ballroom are Waltz, Tango, Rumba, East Coast Swing, and Cha Cha. If you are interested in learning how to dance, you will want to figure out your goals. If your goal is to go out dancing at a local latin dance club, you will want to learn salsa, merengue, bachata.

Ballroom dancing is a ton of fun and has become increasingly popular in the USA. I encourage you to try it and see if you like it. It is a great hobby that may be able to help you to stay in shape and enjoy life just a little bit more.

10 Best Mexican Movies

The 10 best Mexican movies of all time span a broad range of styles, from comedies to thrillers. Many of the best Mexican movies have found critical and commercial success in the United States and elsewhere in recent years, winning major awards and expanding the reach of the audience for Mexican movies. In many cases, these movies find subtle and overt ways to shine a light on political corruption and class struggles in modern-day Mexico.

Y Tu Mama Tambien
1. “Y Tu Mama Tambien”: A stark, funny and sometimes haunting look at personal and sexual politics, “Y Tu Mama Tambien” earned director Alfonso Cuaron and his brother Carlos nominations for Best Original Screenplay at the 2002 Academy Awards. One of the best Mexican movies of the 2000s, it also helped launch the careers of stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna.

Like Water for Chocolate [VHS]

2. “Like Water for Chocolate”: Based on a story by Laura Esquivel and directed by her then-husband Alfonso Arau, “Like Water for Chocolate” became the highest-grossing Spanish-language film of all time in Mexico after its release in 1992. The erotic story focuses on forbidden love and the sensual nature of cooking.

Amores Perros
3. “Amores Perros”: The first of three films revolving around the random nature of death from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, “Amores Perros” focuses on how one tragic car accident impacted three unrelated groups of people. Considered one of the most innovative Mexican movies in recent times, “Amores Perros” has been compared to Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction.”

Pan's Labyrinth4. “Pan’s Labyrinth”: Along with Alfonso Cuaron and Inarritu, “Pan’s Labyrinth” director Guillermo del Toro is considered to be one of the best Mexican movie directors and one of the “Tres Amigos” of Mexican cinema. A dark fairy tale set in post-Civil War Spain, “Pan’s Labyrinth” earned a Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award nomination and won three other awards.

El Mariachi (Special Edition)
5. “El Mariachi”: Made for a shoestring budget of $7,000 and intended for the Mexican home movie market, Robert Rodriguez’s tale of a guitar player turned vigilante launched his career. He would return to the story for the big-budget remake “Desperado” starring Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek.

Rudo Y Cursi6. “Rudo y Cursi”: Reuniting “Y Tu Mama Tambien” stars Bernal and Luna with Carlos Cuaron, “Rudi y Cursi” tells the story of a pair of lower-class brothers attempting to become professional soccer players. While broader and more slapstick than “Y Tu Mama Tambien,” “Rudo Y Cursi” mixes humor with political messages about class structures to become one of the best Mexican movies in recent years.

Nosotros Los Pobres7. “Nosotros los Pobres”: Directed by Ismael Rodriguez, “Nosotros los Pobres” became the biggest film of the Mexican Golden Age of cinema when it was released in 1948. Unlike most Mexican movies of the time, “Nosotros los Pobres” avoids clichés, cheap laughs or overt melodrama to present a portrait of the poor in Mexico that stands up today.

Cronos (The Criterion Collection)8. “Cronos”: The first of del Toro’s movies to receive a theatrical release in the United States, “Cronos” is a psychological thriller which owes a strong debt to the works of David Cronenberg.

Babel9. “Babel”: Released in 2006 as the final part of Inarritu’s trilogy of death, “Babel” was nominated for seven Oscars including Best Picture. It uses three stories to show how language can unite or isolate individuals.

Lucia, Lucia: A Novel10. “Lucia, Lucia”: The 2003 release by Antonio Serrano follows the journey of a children’s book writer dealing with the apparent kidnapping of her husband. Cecila Roth shines in one of the best Mexican films of the 2000s, giving fullness to the title character.

Sandra Bullock and Demi Lovato Donate $1 Million Each to Japan Disaster Relief

Sandra Bullock and Demi Lovato have donated $1 million each to the Japanese disaster relief, according to several reports.

CNN is reporting that Bullock sent the donation to the American Red Cross to help with earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan. The contribution was made by 'The Blind Side' actress on behalf of her family.

The Red Cross reports that this was the largest celebrity donation to date, although the charity may have received larger contributions that were kept confidential at the donors' request.

CeleBuzz says that Lovato also donated $1 million to the relief efforts in Japan, and she is encouraging her fans to donate as well.

Lovato was spotted in Los Angeles holding the Japanese flag with the words "Please Help" written across it, trying to drum up monetary support for the relief efforts.

Other celebrities have joined the relief effort as well. The Daily Mail is reporting that the Black Eyed Peas are dedicating their latest video to the victims of the Japanese Disaster.

The Peas shot the video for the song 'Just Can't Get Enough' in Japan just a week before the disaster hit.

The video will now start with the message, "This video was filmed in Japan one week before the earthquake and tsunami."

And the message continues to say, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the people of Japan. We love you."

Lady Gaga was one of the first celebrities to lend support to the Japanese relief effort. The singer designed a white and red wristband for fans to purchase in her official online store, and she said that all sales proceeds will benefit victims of the disaster.

Gaga also revealed that the $5 price tag can be voluntarily increased by any buyers wishing to boost their monetary donations.

The Red Cross urges: "Text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific."

Our Sexiest Leading Ladies and Their Younger Men

Selena Gomez (18) and Justin Bieber (17)

These two young stars tried to keep their romance a secret for the longest, but there was no denying they were a couple after they were caught canoodling by determined paparazzo during a romantic Caribbean getaway. Selena and the Biebs finally went public with their relationship in February at the Vanity Fair Oscars after party. Though they started dating when Bieber was only 16 and Selena was 18 (technically making their coupling illegal, gasp!), the young pop star really seems to know a thing or two about treating his lady like a queen.

Elsa Pataky (34) and Chris Hemsworth (27)

Just three months after Elsa Pataky and Chris Hemsworth went public with their relationship at a party held by LACMA in Los Angeles this September, the couple was secretly married. The Spanish actress met her Australian beau through their mutual agent. The two dated for a long time before coming out publically as a couple and wed during over the Christmas holidays in a small, intimate ceremony on the Indonesian Islands.

Shakira (34) and Gerard Pique (24)

The ten-year age difference between these two does not seem to be making a bit of a difference in their relationship. The 20-something FC Barcelona defender first met his Colombian pop princess when they filmed the music video for the 2010 World Cup anthem “Waka, Waka” and though they both denied being romantically involved for months, a recent photo of them making out proves otherwise. After ending an 11-year romance with her manager and business partner Antonio de la Rua (announced via Shaki’s official website in early January), Shakira seems to be thriving on Pique’s youthful energy.

Eva Longoria (36) and Eduardo Cruz (25)

Shortly after her traumatizing divorce to NBA player Tony Parker, Longoria was spotted kissing and cuddling in LA with Penelope Cruz’s sexy younger brother Eduardo. The two went sort of public as a couple in January, gallivanting around town and locking lips in fancy restaurants all over L.A., but have yet to make anything official. What looked like a quick rebound relationship for the Desperate Housewives actress may be on its way to true romance.

Mariah Carey (40) and Nick Cannon (30)

When the news of Mariah Carey’s wedding to Nick Cannon broke, even we were shocked. Many were skeptical when these two got together, but they were so in love we just had to be happy for the diva.  The two met while shooting the video for “Bye Bye,” Mariah’s second single off of E=MC². They married shortly after at her private estate on Windermere Island on April 30, 2008. If Nick still needs to do any growing up, we’re sure the twins they are expecting will certainly help speed up the process.

Cameron Diaz (38) Alex Rodriguez (35)

Originally we thought anything between these two had to be a fling, but they’ve since proved us wrong. The Yankee has been around the bases with a string of high-profile stars since his split with his wife in 2008, including Kate Hudson and Madonna. But Diaz doesn’t seem like just another notch in his belt. Their romance is going strong and with the amount of time Cam has been spending around Rodriguez’s little girls, it looks like things may be getting serious. Dating a younger man seems to be doing wonders for Diaz, who has been sporting an even more killer then usual body since she and A-Rod became work out buddies!

Christina Aguilera (30) and Matt Rutler (25)

Christina and ex-husband Jordan Bratman filed for divorce in October 2010. Shortly afterward, Aguilera was spotted holding hands with the Burlesque set assistant Matthew Rutler. The age difference actually might not be working out so great for these two. Since the couple’s relationship began Aguilera’s been partying more than usual and was recently arrested for public intoxication when Rutler was pulled over by LAPD for driving under the influence. Christina’s never exhibited the kind of behavior in the past, especially not since she gave birth to son 3-year-old son Max.

Kate del Castillo (38) and Aaron Diaz (29)

After divorcing soccer player Luis Garcia, Kate del Castillo found love with the ridiculously handsome telenovela actor, Aaron Diaz. The two announced their engagement in September 2008 and got married in 2009 in Las Vegas. Castillo is on top of the world these days; her telenovela La Reina del Sur is breaking ratings records for Telemundo and she is looking better than ever. Who can even tell that this couple is 9 years apart in age?

The 10 Most Iconic Latino TV Characters of All Time

It got us thinking about Latinos in iconic performances on TV. Here are our top choices. Be sure to let us know if you agree or if you think we forgot anyone in the comments below:

America Ferrera as Betty Suarez on Ugly Betty

The nation fell in love with Ferrera’s portrayal of a seriously fashion-challenged chica with a heart of gold. Why? Because Betty was a refreshing character, she had integrity and didn’t rely on smirks, cleavage or put-downs to gain popularity. America captured this perfectly, conveying Betty’s’ strength from underneath the furry eyebrows, braces and horrible ponchos and in the end, giving us a bona fide modern classic.

Eva Longoria as Gabrielle Solis on Desperate Housewives

In the hands of a lesser actress, the oversexed Gabrielle could have been a throwaway, stereotypical character. Instead, Longoria, thanks to great comic timing and physical acting, managed to make her both outrageous and relatable, making Gabrielle a fan favorite and Longoria the show’s breakout star.

Freddie Prinze as Chico Rodriguez on Chico and the Man

Hiring a Puerto Rican-Hungarian from New York to portray a Chicano from East L.A. may have seemed like a stretch, but Prinze is perfect as the sweet (and sexy!) kid who wins over a crabby old white guy who won’t adapt to the changing neighborhood. Prinze came to the show a rising comedian whose sharp stand-up skills and charisma had made him a late-night show staple, but it was his performance on Chico and the Man that made him a star.

Desi Arnaz as Ricky Ricardo on I Love Lucy

Literally the daddy of all iconic TV portrayals by a Latino, Arnaz’s bandleader married to a crazy Americana was the first leading boob-tube role for one of us. Arnaz may have been a musician and pioneering TV producer in real life, but he’s most remembered as the exasperated Ricky and his catchphrase, said in his trademark heavy accent, “Luuuuucy, I’m home!”

Wilson Cruz as Ricky Vasquez in My So-Called Life

Cruz came to Hollywood refusing to hide his homosexuality—something still considered career suicide by many—and his honesty paid off. In this cult fave, he endows Ricky, a gay teen who has been physically abused and who, like Cruz himself, was kicked out of his home for his sexual orientation, with undeniable humanity and compassion.

Jimmy Smits as Victor Sifuentes on L.A. Law

Jimmy Smits has rocked many an amazing role on TV: As Bobby Simone in NYPD Blue, Matt Santos on The West Wing and Miguel Prado on Dexter come to mind (we’re still shocked he hasn’t won an Emmy), but this one is closest to our hearts. That’s because with Hollywood often portraying Latinos as criminals, service workers or smarmy Latin lover types, the arrival of Smits as a polished lawyer with a strong sense of social justice rebooted the way the industry looked at our actors. All that, and he was the hottest guy on the show.

Dora the Explorer on Dora the Explorer

Is it weird that one of our most positive portrayals onscreen is by an animated character? Who cares? All that matters is that a whole generation of kids has grown up with an intrepid, brown, bilingual girl as a role model.

Erik Estrada as Ponch on CHiPs

Two words: man meat.  Estrada was hot and great hair and a great smile and that is why he was on this vapid but iconic show about hot cops on motorcycles. Yes, CHiPs was cheesetastic and so was Estrada’s performance  (hey, they can’t all be Smits or Olmos), but sometimes that’s all you want in a show. Tons of girls had his poster on their walls and that was enough to make him an enduring sex symbol.

Edward James Olmos as William Adama on Battlestar Galactica

Yes, we loved him as the tipo serio Lt. Martin Castillo on the iconic show Miami Vice, for which he won an Emmy and a Golden Globe, but on Battlestar Galactica, Oscar-nominated Olmos did what no other onscreen Latino had done before: Command a fleet of spaceships protecting humanity from evil aliens in the future! More than a sci-fi show, Galactica was a mix of political and social drama and adventure, and it took someone with Olmos’ acting gravitas to pull it together.

Jorge Garcia as Hurley on Lost

Hurley was not hot, he was not suave. He did not look like a lot of people’s idea of a Latino: He was a light-skinned, freckled, outsize comic-book-reading nerd with hippie hair and sideburns—and he utterly charmed audiences with his laid-back California vibe, endlessly quotable lines and general decency. On Lost, Hurley often spoke out loud what we were thinking while watching this confounding, groundbreaking show at home: mainly, “WTF just happened?” No wonder Garcia became the fan favorite and the only one on the show who has individually permeated pop culture: There are Hurley dolls and even a Weezer album cover featuring his image.
