Steve Jobs Has Died at 56: Apple Breaks News with Online Memorial

Steve Jobs (February 24, 1955 - October 5, 2011) is the co-founder and former CEO of Apple Computer and was the CEO of Pixar until its acquisition by Disney. He has a cult-like following among techies and is known as a visionary entrepreneur. He is widely credited with the turn-around at Apple Computer. He died on October 5, 2011, a few weeks after leaving his post at Apple.

Steve Jobs has died at 56, and Apple, the company synonymous with his name, broke the news by posting a simple but moving online memorial that took over Apple.com Wednesday afternoon.

As news of Jobs' death spreads, details remain scant. The technology innovator and businessman fought a long battle with pancreatic cancer first revealed to the public in 2004. Since then he underwent a series of medical procedures, including surgery to remove the initial tumor in 2004 and a liver transplant in 2009. Jobs guarded his privacy closely in the years preceding his death, often refusing to answer questions about his health.

Jobs announced his resignation as Apple's CEO on August 24, 2011, leaving Tim Cook to run the company. It has previously been reported that Jobs left detailed instructions for the next five years of Apple's product roll-outs, giving the company some leadway into its post-Jobs era.

A San Francisco native, Jobs spent most of his life in the Bay Area. He will be remembered, among other innovations, for his work on hand-held computers including the iPod, iPhone and iPad.
