Latinos are winners—no one knows that better than we do! But never before have Latinos won as many reality shows as we did this year! Not only did we win all of the major singing competitions (American Idol, The Voice, The Sing-Off), but we also won TV”s biggest dancing show (Dancing With the Stars)! Check out the five talented Latinos who won reality shows this year!
Scotty McCreery, 18
It may have taken 10 seasons—and the addition of Jennifer Lopez as a judge—for a Latino to win FOX’s singing competition American Idol—but the important thing is that it finally happened! On May 26th, 2011, Scotty McCreery made history by becoming the first Latino to win American Idol!

Javier Colon, 34
We can’t say we were surprised when Javier Colon won the first season of NBC’s hit reality competition, The Voice this past summer—beating out Dia Frampton by just 2% of the vote. After all, his renditions of hit songs like Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” and Coldplay’s “Fix You," were pitch-perfect! And when we told the half-Dominican, half-Puerto Rican Javier that Scotty McCreery—who’s part-Puerto Rican—also won American idol, he said, “we’re taking over!”
Spoiler Alert: The Winner of 'The Voice' is...
J.R. Martinez, 28
“I want to make my Latin community proud!” That’s what Salvadorian actor J.R. Martinez told Latina.com following the second episode of Dancing With the Stars. With weeks to go in the competition, the Army vet and former All My Children star told us he wanted to become the second Latino—behind racecar driver Helio Castroneves—to win Dancing With the Stars. “I’m definitely planning on it!” he said. “Growing up and being raised by a single mother, my mother always taught me how to dance cumbias and salsa, so I plan on putting all that stuff to use in all of these dances and take it all home!” On November 23rd, 2011, J.R. won season 13 of Dancing With the Stars. Mission accomplished!

Kirstie Maldonado, 19
Last week, Pentatonix—a Texas-based electro-funky quintet—won NBC”s singing competition The Sing-Off. Kirstie Maldonado, the only female member of the group, is Latina! Maldonado’s father is Mexican-American and her mother is Spanish and Italian.
Nastassja Bolivar, 23
On May 22nd, 2011, the Nicaraguan beauty queen won the fifth season of Univision’s hit reality competition Nuestra Belleza Latina. She won a grand prize of $250,000, a contract with Univision and the title of Nuestra Belleza Latina 2011. Nastassja told Latina.com she was surprised when she won the competition. “To actually accomplish it, is something so surreal," she said. "I’m so grateful to the public, and all the people who voted for me, all the Latinos out there. I’m so happy they chose me to represent what it is to be a Latina woman.”
