He may have come out on top of last season on Dancing with the Stars, but Hines Ward was definitely not winning this weekend. According to police reports, the star football player was arrested for drunk driving in Atlanta.
DeKalb County police pulled over the football and dancing star around 2:30am on Saturday when his car was stopped for erratic driving. Although Ward claimed to have only drunk two beers several hours earlier, he failed a series of sobriety tests and was therefore arrested for a DUI. An unofficial breathalyzer test at the time gave a reading of .128, well above the legal limit of .08.
Hines Ward was arrested at the scene and taken to the DeKalb County jail before being released on bail. He will have to return for a court appearance on October 6, where he will face a misdemeanor drunk-driving charge. If convicted, Ward could conceivably face a $1000 fine and up to a year of jail time.
Of course, that's pretty unlikely for a wealthy and famous football star.
Hines Ward's lawyer released a statement on Saturday claiming that Ward was not, in fact, impaired at the time but was cooperating with the police in their investigation.
The football player has been famous in sports' circles for years, having played in three Super Bowls. Ward's most recent Super Bowl appearance was with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2011 (losing to Green Bay), while the team won the championship in their previous appearances in 2006 and 2009.
Those of us not so in to football first learned of the man when he exploded onto the Dancing with the Stars scene for its 12th season this past spring. Along with his partner, Kym Johnson, Hines Ward dominated the dancing competition, always ranking at or near the top throughout the weeks. He emerged victorious in the DWTS finals, beating out Kirstie Alley and Chelsea Kane for the Mirror Ball.
