Legendary Folk Singer Facundo Cabral Murdered in Guatemala

Latin America lost a legend this past weekend. Facundo Cabral was shot and killed on Saturday in Guatemala. The 74-year-old Argentine singer/song-writer was en route to Guatemala City’s airport when unidentified gunmen in unmarked vehicles drove up beside Cabral and his team and opened fire. Cabral was shot at least eight times. His concert promoter, Henry Fariña, and road manager Davíd Llanos, were wounded.

A fixture of the folk scene for more than five decades, Cabral became famous in Latin America in the 1970s as a protest singer. He fled to Mexico in March 1976 after the Argentine military seized power in a coup. According to The New York Times, Cabral remained in exile until the collapse of the Argentine dictatorship in 1982. In 1996, Cabral was designated a “worldwide messenger of peace” by the United Nations. Cabral’s most popular song was “No Soy De Aqui Ni Allá” (“I’m Not From Here, I’m Not From There”), one of the world’s most covered songs.

Llanos said he didn’t know why this happened because Facundo was well-known around the world.  “I don’t see why anyone would be interested in killing him,” he said.
