Gisele Bundchen Launches Amazon Campaign

Brazilian top model Gisele Bündchen, one of the most sought-after in the world, expressed her support for World Amazon Day by launching an online campaign in defense of the rainforests, in which she puts her fame at the service of an area whose vegetation has been described as "the lungs of our planet."

The campaign was launched Monday on YouTube to coincide with Brazil's celebration of World Amazon Day, begun in 2007 with the goal of alerting the world about the need to preserve that region of 6.9 million sq. kilometers (2.6 million sq. miles), of which 4.2 million sq. kilometers (1.6 million sq. miles) are in Brazilian territory.
As goodwill ambassador for the U.N. environmental program, Bündchen recalled that 2011 has been named the International Year of Forests by the United Nations, so that World Amazon Day has a special significance this time around.

"One of the most gratifying things about my work is to be able to travel around the world and get to know the diversity of life on our planet," the model says on the video, in which she stresses "how important it is for all of us to preserve nature."

"The sad part is that deforestation (in the Amazon) is increasing at an alarming rate, threatening the forest and our lives, because our health depends on our planet's health," the model says on the video, which shows shocking images illustrating the destruction of the jungle.

"We have to take the steps now to protect our planet's health" and our own lives, since otherwise it will be impossible to "live in harmony with this wonderful planet," Bündchen said.

The model also asks her fans on several social networks to spread the message worldwide, because, she says, we have to be the change we wish to see in the world.
