After 10 weeks of grueling competition, one team was proclaimed winners of the mirrorball. Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward with the help of professional dancer Kym Johnson won this season’s Dancing with the Stars.
Hines and partner Kym beat out Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy for the top spot based on 50% viewer votes, and 50% judges’ scores. Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas took third place.
The finale showcased the top two contender’s performing their favorite dance from the season for judges’ scores. Hines and Kym received a perfect 30 out of 30 for their samba. Kirstie opted for opening night cha cha with Maks, in the same outfit she wore in March which was altered half the original size. The pair earned their very first perfect score of the season from the panel.
Kym’s win makes her two-time winner after winning in Season 9 with Donny Osmond. But this season was very tough on her part. Last week, Kym was sent her to the hospital and caused a sprain in her neck after Hines landed on top of Kym, pressing her neck into the ground beneath him. Hines broke down and cried after performing the routine.
After missing out the Super Bowl ring back in February, Hines dedicated his mirrorball to his fans. “We love Steeler Nation, Bulldog Nation (University of Georgia)… I hope I represented well,” he said.
Runner-up Kirstie said,”It’s like the most extraordinary adventure I’ve ever been on in my life and I want to thank Maks. I love Maks.”
