Spring Shopping Trends Report

The Spring has sprung—so it's clearly time to chuck those scratchy woolens and shop for bright, new clothes.

At the Spring fashion shows last year, the overall mood for this season was a new sense of sobriety. Most designers pulled back on the reigns to show more comfortable, minimal silhouettes. Clothes were sportswear inspired, with a very chic, carefree, effortless sense of spirit.

Here's what you should be looking for:

SHORTS. They're back in every shape and length: short shorts, city shorts, utility shorts, boy shorts and tap shorts. The look is great when paired with a jacket.

WIDE LEG PANTS. All sorts of trousers went down the runway for Spring: High wasted, cropped, loose at the hip, tapered at the ankle. But the newest look is the wide leg trouser. A white version is a perfect base to build from this season.

TUXEDO JACKETS. The Yves St. Laurent-inspired smoking jacket won't only be a look for evening, but a key option for daytime.

ALL SORTS OF DRESSES. The slouch, no-fit dress was a favorite, but also popular were the long and lean variety with halter, tank, scoop and asymmetric necklines.

1950'S SKIRTS. Prepare to see lots of Fifties-inspired knee-length skirts, those with a full flare and defined waist.

LONGER LINES. The newest and most chic are from knee- to mid calf length. Longing for a mini? Not to worry, there still will be some available.

NEUTRAL COLOR. The color palette took two separate tracks. Most sophisticated were the neutral tones mixed with pale tints and whites.

BOLD COLOR. But burst of bold, shocking colors were also in evidence.

LIGHTWEIGHT FABRICS. Flowing fabrics heralded spring collections. Stars in this category were the transparent sheer fabrics that did not leave anything to the imagination. In real life,layer these over slips or wear them under a jacket.

PRINTS. In every shape, size and form, these added drama to collections. Geometric, animal prints, stripes, polka dots, foulards and floral prints are the newest vogue.

SENSIBLE SHOES. Hooray, they're back! Ankle-strapped wedges, espadrilles and flat shoes will get women out walking instead of cabbing it in Spring 2011.

"Anu Raina Collection- LG Canadian Fashion Week 2011"

Anu Raina’s story began in Srinagar, Kashmir where she was born and raised. A forced mass exodus from her homeland led her to pursue her undergraduate degree in Biology from Delhi University. However strong urge to be in a creative field led her to enrol in a Fashion Program at the London College of Fashion, London, England. Upon completion of her Fashion program, she went on to set up an apparel and textiles start-up "Just Beans" in Delhi.

Before moving to Canada in 2004, Anu participated in several design shows across the globe in cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Paris and Frankfurt. In 2008, she enrolled herself in the Textile Design program at the Sheridan College.

Anu completed the program within 2 years and graduated in 2010 with High Honours, top medal and several awards and scholarships. In this short span her Textile work has already been shown at a number of well-respected venues across North America including being selected as an Artist-in-Residence at the prestigious Harbourfront Centre in Toronto.

Her recent autobiographical art work titled "Chapter 2, Page 1" has been selected for an upcoming exhibition at the Pearson Airport from 16 April - 3 October, 2011. Her Fall 2011, debut line of clothing that she is showing at the The LG Fashion week in Toronto on April 1, 2011 is inspired by her art work “Chapter 2, Page1. Currently Anu lives in Oakville, Ontario with her husband and two children.

"Amanda LewKee Collection- LG Canadian Fashion Week 2011"

Amanda Lew Kee is a women's wear designer born and raised in Toronto, Canada. At a young age, Lew Kee discovered her love and passion for innovative design and further established her talent at Ryerson University, where she graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Design in Fashion. Amanda Lew Kee's collection was premiered at the exclusive Mass Exodus 2010: In Bloom's Press and Media showing at Ryerson University.

The designs have also been displayed at Holt Renfrew's annual showcase of selected Ryerson graduates, as well as winning Flare Magazine's student editiorial competition featured in the August 2010 issue. Straight out of University, Amanda hosted her industry debut (May 2010) at the Great Hall in Toronto and later was invited to show her SS2011 collection at Toronto's LG Fashion Week (October 2010).

Soon after, Amanda was invited by The Fashion Collective and the FDCC to show at Toronto's LG Fashion Week, October 2010. Amanda's showing was the most anticipated collection of the season. As the audience arrived additional seating had to be arranged to accommodate the large attendance.

Montreal's Ka Magazine also extended the invite to Amanda Lew Kee to show her Spring'11 collection at the first annual Ka Best Of Canada 2010 Benefit Event that was hosted in a 35,000 square foot private jet hanger at Starlink Aviation, in Dorval, QC.

Amanda has worked on many projects aside from building her brand, currently she is working on custom wardrobe for HBO's TRUE BLOOD, she dressed Shenae Grimes of 90210 for the 2010 MMVA's, Keri Hilson for various red carpets and photoshots, was the muse and wardrobed a music video for Fritz Helder.

She has been featured in Teen Vogue, Nylon Magazine Sept 2010 issue as one of the Top Canadian Designers, The Globe and Mail's quarterly Lifestyle Magazine as Canadian Designer to Watch, WeAr Magazine's January 2011 issue as 'Designer to watch', the TorontoStar as one of 2010's best dressed, EyeWeekly's 2010 Most Powerful People, LOOK Magazine UK Sept 2010, and featured on segments of Fashion Television's In Fashion.

At age 21, Amanda had already had attracted the attention of industry heavy weights Lisa Tant, Derek Blasberg, Glen Baxter, Adrian Mainella, and Derick Chetty to name a few.

At Joe Fresh a splashy orange microfiber coat opened the show on a smil­ing model fol­lowed by a slew of orange touched and sat­u­rated dresses, coats and genius acces­sories. At times it felt like designer Joe Mimran’s col­lec­tion was a mass mar­ket ver­sion of the Tron Legacy Open­ing Cer­e­mony line, which isn’t such a bad thing, with tai­lored camels and emer­ald greens throw in here and there to bring it back to the more con­ser­v­a­tive tone of pre­vi­ous collections.
